Gas Gauge is awful!
« on: July 22, 2007, 01:05:49 PM »
Has anyone ever really fixed the funky ass gas gauges in these cars? Is it the cluster or the Sending unit. Mines annoying, you fill it up, and the needle flies past the F un in the UNLEADED FUEL part like way up there, and the F turns into basicly meaning 3/4 of a tank, and 1/2 is DEFINTLY not half, i filled it up when the gauge said half, and i put in like 13 gallons, lol, and it drops like a rock after that, the low fuel light comes on at the usual 2 gallons left, and all that, and the needles VERY sensitive, like u take a corner, or stop or go the gauge just flies all over, up and down FULL to Empty to gas light up and down.

Sounds like a bad sending unit, it shouldnt just "fly all over". But if it aint completely broke, dont fix it.

Prospeeder, mine also did this, so I lowered the gas tank and took out the sending unit and you should plainly see their will be corrorsion on the unit itself, just change it and that'll take care of it.

I think your lucky.  :icon_wink:The fuel and oil pressure are the only gauges that come even close to being accurate on this POS cluster.

Ic, well when ever the fuel pump goes out or I have some money thats burning a hole in my pocket ill definatly replace it. Its wierd, my Speedo and Tach seem to be fairly acurate, Speedo only get 2-3 mph off at higher speeds, and my Tach i think according to the scantool is 200 rpms high.

Strange... all of my gauges are correct- even the boost gauge seems to be very close to actual #'s.... but my speedo is off about 25% I believe and my tach is off a bit- at idle it is only a few hundred RPM's off, but when shifting at WOT it shows it shifting at 6,100 RPM when it is actually shifting at 5,200 RPM (verified by scantool).

Every GM ive owned has had funky gas gauge. Ive been told they get inaccurate over time because the needles stay at say 1/2 tank when the car is shut off instead of reseting to E. And i believe the needle moves when you go around a turn becasue the gas is sloshing around and reads as a 1/4 or 1/2 tank.

ya, I have owned a lot of GMs and so has friends and family, and almost every one has done the same thing, even my newer 99 Malibu does it...stays full for a while then just drops... seems to be a common problem from my experience

I had an issues kinda like that with my Focus...yes I owned a Focus

I took the needle of and filled it up all the way to the top and then put the needle back on the gauge face where the F was.

of course if it keeps acting like a flying monkey check the ground for the sending unit, rust and corrosion will make it work like a Daewoo...lol
