I currently have a black 90 grand prix SE non-turbo but i'm looking to upgrade.  On my current car, I have done a few lighting type mods.  One was to attach a 10" red neon bulb (10$ walmart) up behind the grill.  The light is supposed to go with the beat of the music like a lot of the newer lights to so I adjusted the sensitivity way down. Now, when I sit at a light or driving or whatever and rev the engine up, the light is activated and it illuminates the grill/ground/fogs. It looks flat scarry when its dark and my headlights are off and I rev it up!  Even with the headlights on, the light is perfectly visible.   I think it looks like there is a fire within the car almost as it lights up.  I am going to try and get some pictures eventually but my camera won't take pics if it is too dark b/c it doesn't have a flash.  I wanna know what you guys think of the idea.  I have another mod, but i'm going to put it in a different post... ever seen knight rider??

The only problem I have with mods like these is guys who drive around with them on. They are very distracting to most of the idiot drivers out there.

Otherwise, its very cool!

...and you can get arrested for having red/blue exterior lighting on your car....and turning them on while driving down the road.

It's called impersonating an officer. No joke..I know people who have been arrested for it already.

Yeah, I have another light on the front of my car that goes back and forth like knight rider and I was showing some people the light driving down the road and of course, a cop came in the other direction at the same time   He only gave me a warning though thankfully.

It really depends on the state. Like, in NC I never got messed with for an of my neon or anything, as long as it didnt push the border to impersonating and officer. But in wisconsin, you will get pulled over for anything. Our beetle has odd color headlights stock(2002 GLS) and we got pulled ovr for those saying they were illegal. I just told him to take it up with VW. They killer here is, all the lights are legal on Tractor trailers. Go figure....

That last statement isn't exactly correct. Technically only yellow or red lights are legal in the lower 48 states. I was a truck-driver for 2 years and was repremanded for having a blue light lense on the rear exterior of my cab (in between the trailer front and the rear of the cab). DOT regulations say if it is facing to the rear of the vehicle it must be red..like a tail light. Facing forward or on the front of the vehicle it must be yellow. Any other colors and the highway patrol can ask you to replace the stock color lenses... 8)

I haven't looked at the DOT regs

But in MD, rear facing lights can either be yellow or red. Trailers are actually allowed to have amber brake lights. The only white lights on the back can be the tag lights. Reverse lights must be white but must only illuminate when in reverse.

Rear reflectors must be red, and rear side reflectors must be red. Rear side marker lights must be red, as well as clearance and ID lights. Clearance lights go at the extreme widest part of the vehicle as close to the top as possible. ID Lights are the 3 lights in the center of the vehicle only if its over 80 inches wide. Clearance lights may be at the bottom of the vehicle if the ID lights are at the top. Tail lights may be red and front parking lights may be red or white.

Front lights may be either white or yellow, with the side markers and front side reflectors being yellow. A vehicle over 30ft in length must have a side marker midway between the front and rear of the vehicle. Trailers do not need front clearance or ID lights but do need amber front side markers and reflectors.

All other lights are illegal. Red lights on the front are illegal, whilte lights on the rear are illegal and blue lights are illegal. All lights must be DOT approved. So those trucks that look like some sort of christmas decoration are illegal.

Theres MD Vehicle lighting code in a nut shell.

Here are the Federal rules for vehicle lighting in the US and Canada. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/standards/conspicuity/TBMpstr.html I had 154 marker and clearance lights on my tractor and trailer and never had a DOT official or law enforcement officer say a word to me in the lower 48 states, Canada, or Nova Scotia. The trucks you see that look like a christmas tree (chicken trucks in trucker slang :drinking: ) are legal as long as the lights are yellow and red and placed in accordance with the rules. No white lights are permitted to be directly pointed or illuminated at another drivers eyes unless they are very low intensity, reverse lights, or driving lights. There are no rules governing the maximum number of lights...only the minimum. One thing that DOT will ticket a driver on is a light fixture in place that does not illuminate. In other words...if it is there it must work. White, Yellow, or Red are the only legal colors that can be illuminated on any non-emergency vehicle...large or small.

Now I think we have offically gotten much deeper into the subject than needed!!      8)

Thanks for the link.

One thing that is very hard with inspecting cars, is MD likes to keep it vague on some things, and lights are one of them.

Thanks for the correction on the maximum number of lights. They kinda left it to "if it doesn't say you can have it then you can't have it."

And yeah, it is kinda deep. But hey now others know too.

The light in the grill thing is pretty cool, i think I am going to do it lol, but if it gets rained on a bunch I am sure it will get messed up, we will see though.
