Well, I don't have a ton of experience with the TGPs, but I know when I bought my very first '86 6000 STE with the 2.8, it gave me trouble right away.  It would back fire, and then die if I tried to step on the pedal harder.  I had many different things changed on it within a couple of days (bought it with 164K neglected miles    ), but every time we thought we nailed it, BAM.  It got worse and worse till finally, it shut off and would just cranked, not turning over at all.  We changed the ignition module, and low and behold, I never had a problem with it again after that.

BUT...everything your mechanic friend mentioned are very good possibilities.  There are supposedly some differences in the TGP computer vs. regular 2.8/3.1s, so I don't know how accurate it would be to test it with a non TGP computer.  Maybe someone knows better than me on that subject.  Good luck!!
