Jeff:  You probably don't remember, but we spoke on the phone about this when Jamie picked-up those parts for you from me about a year back.  Actually, this guy I talked to a few years back (the guy who sold me my first AWD) said that there were 50   6000 STE AWD Turbos made, not 25.  I miss understood him at the time, thinking he meant 50 AWD TGPs, not the other way around.  He worked for GM Corp. at the time, and supposedly test drove MANY AWDs before the regular production ones came out (if you can call 124 '88s regular production).  He drove one of the 7 prototypes in '87, when they still had the 2.8s in them.  He pointed out some great details that he remembered from them, like a sticker on the gauges that said "E really means empty!"  In other words, it doesn't mean you have a gallon or two left like 99% of other cars.  If you let the digital gauge show that there are no bars left, you're finished!  He also said he could have got out and run faster.  The AWD version of the STE weighs over 300lbs more than any FWD 6000, thus the reason they went to the 3.1.

Also, during my quest for more info on swapping a TGP motor into one of the AWDs, some kid came across one of my posts somewhere a few months back asking the best way to go about beefing up the HM125C 3-speed.  He e-mailed me to say that the 3-speed should have no problem handling the new torque and hp from a turbo.  He was running nitrous on a Sunbird and Cavalier with the same 3.1 in them, mated to the same 125C.  With the shots he was using, he said he was running nearly 300hp in them without a problem on the original, 100K+ mile trannies, so it should be fine.  He also said he doesn't care what anyone says, he knows for a fact there were turbo STEs made because he saw 2 with his own eyes.  One at a junkyard   , and one at a "run what you brung" track event.

Between the guy who worked with them, the guy who saw two, and the blurb on the McLaren site (before it was redone) about a 6000 STE being one of the cars they worked on, I am pretty confident they were built.  Probably not many left, though, if any at all.

QuoteJust to mention these 1991 3400 STEs had the same larger hood louvers the TGP and TSTE had
Just to add my 2 cents worth :twocents:  - I own a 1991 STE with the 3.4 24 Valve V6 - And it did not come with a louvered hood.
That is why I am now searching for a Louvered hood for it, this engine runs very HOT!
I am the original owner of this beauty and it only has 47k miles on it, and it's loaded to the gills (all except HUD  :(  )
BTW - Does anyone know if there is a kit or some other way to add a turbo to my 3.4??  Someone suggested that this was a possibility, if so I would love to know how.  Any and all info on this would be appreciated!
PS - this was interesting reading - great history lesson!
