how difficult is it to change the subframe and strut assembly in the front on our cars?  The garage says that the right needs to be replaced but I'm not sure exactly what is broken or what needs to be replaced specifically. The estimate says "strut assembly and spindle" so I would imagine there is a lot that is damaged.  I've never done it before just wondering if its worth the money to pay them to do it or try it myself.  Anyone have directions on a site about replacing this or the subframe? I know about the bolts but not the whole subframe.  Also, anyone with a TGP service manual who might want to scan a few pages on this topic for me? It'd be much appreciated :) :)

It's kind of a pita, but not that bad. More time consuming than anything. You also need to have something that can support the engine/trans while you drop the cradle. That itself is 4 large bolts. You also have to deal with all the little stuff like brake lines and such.
90 TGP- Mods, yeah I have them...
90 DSM Turbo 5-speed
02 Beetle GLS

Look! I finally updated my sig!!

support engine transaxle assy
remove wheels
loosen lower ball joint nuts
remove 2 front engine mount nuts and 2 rear trans nuts
remove rack and pinion nut and bolts
seperate ball joints
remove 4 sub frame bolts then remove ball joint nuts and remove subframe

Strut remove caliper and hang aside
disconnect abs sensor wiring
remove large axle nut, if you don't have an impact you will have to put a screwdriver in the vents of the rotor so it locks against the caliper bracket and remove the nut
remove tie rod nut and seperate tie rod
remove three nuts on top of strut tower
remove strut from vehicle

You may find it easier to remove the rotor and bracket from the strut before removing it to make it lighter.
