Damn... it never ends.
Problem #1... my car likes to overheat. Its fine when its on the highway... but putting around town it gets really hot. WHEN the fan kicks on, it is ok... and the temp comes back down, but I've had a few times when it gets WELL above 220 and the fan never kicks on... which requires me to pull over and wait for the damn thing to cool down. Sometimes my fan works, and sometimes it doesnt.  I want to install a manual fan switch... that way I can 'prepare' for city driving, and leave it on, and when I get on the highway, I can click it off, and just keep an eye on the temp. I'm always watching my gauges anyway. Anybody put in a manual fan switch yet? Can anyone give me instructions?

problem #2... my TCC is acting up big time I think. If I cruise on the highway at, lets say, 60 mph... the rpm's will rise 250-500 rpms, and come back down after a few seconds or minutes. When I first start the car... it idles really low for about 2 seconds then the idle shoots up to like 1700-1800, then GRADUALLY comes back down.

More often then not, my 2-3, and my 3-4 shift is slow/weak. My 1-2 shift is always nice and firm, and hits really well. This is a BRAND NEW trans.  If my TCC is not locking/unlocking when it should, would it cause a soft/slow 2/3, and a soft/slow 3/4 shift?!

For some reason, I'm thinking the TPS. The TPS is tied in with the TCC right? So when I mash the gas, it will lock/unlock the converter? I am at a complete loss. Everything on/in the trans is brand new, so that sort of narrows anything else out. New converter also.

Help.  This car is fun... but sucks as a daily driver unless you have the $$$ to fix it all the time. :( I want my car to run good.  waaa waaa. haha

Thanks in advance guys,
Zach S.

 The tranny people need to adjust the Vacuum modulator, the pressure isn't correct.

Jim...

I've got the adjustable vacuum modulator from Jeff on my car.  It's not screwed all the way in, but its probably 2 or 3 turns from it.  The 1-2 shift is JUST how I like it, but the rest of them seem weak at times.

Any ideas?  :(

Thanks,
Zach

you need to take it to the tranny guys and have them set it to the proper pressure, I don't remember what it is :(  but what happens is that you can get good 1-2 and 2-3 shifts if the pressure is set correctly, if it is wrong you either get hard 1-2 and soft 2-3 or soft 1-2 and hard 2-3... either of these conditions will quickly ruin your tranny because the clutches and internal parts are NOT getting proper lubrication, and you don't have the money to do that again!!!
Don't take the last sentance wrong, I'm just trying to help you out and save you some money. :)

Jim...

I"ll have to talk to my guy this weekend when I go home.

My only other comment is this...

My trans had this problem even WITH the new vacuum modulator in it.  By new... I mean the one that came with the new trans.  I put this adjustable unit in... hoping it would take care of the problem... but as my luck would have it, it didnt fix the problem.  :(

Any other ideas?  :(

Thanks bro,
Zach

I can't find the thread, it may even be on the "old " tgp board. However, I know I asked where you got your "brand new" trans at some point to try and help you with some of your issues.

Finally got my answer!

"hehe... anybody want an auto trans from ac/delco with a 24K warranty?! I'll trade ya for a 5-speed!"

The ACD rebuild isn't a sure thing. Its not a bad rebuild but its not new and is subject to the "rebuilt" quality. Even new could have problems. If you are still having issues now we can try to figure them out.

The modulator that comes with the tranny isn't adjustable. So you'd have to use an adjustable one.

I'll take a five speed any day, Jim, would you recommend everybody to get a adjustable vaccum modulator? My tranny is going out i think because when you get on (i rarely do) it refuses to shift without you letting off the gas, so much for drag racing, by the time you overcome turbo lag (BOV is coming), well you've wasted a lot of time. Any ideas? My tranny was rebuilt six years ago so i suppose it could go out any time. Thanks in Advance,

You know Black Phoenix mine is doing the same thing.. from 1 to 2, If I am really on it, it doesn't want to shift it will red line almost. If I let up it will shift...  If you figure it out let me know.. Mine was also rebuilt about 6 years ago.. They fubar it.. After the rebuild my speedo is like 25 mph off on the highway... unfortunately the place closed 5 months after rebuild... I think owner was killed.. anyways... if you find a cure let me know..

Mine shifts like that from 1-2 also. But then again mine has 170,000 miles on it so I'm not complaining.

red mine only got 83570 on it.. it still a pain...

The high 1-2 shift could be a problem with the governor assembly. The governor is in the tailshaft area. The weights or springs could be binding, or there could be  a leak in the governor hydraulic circut.

Simply put, the throttle input and the governor input control shift speed. The more the throttle is depressed the higher the TV pressure. When governor pressure exceeds TV pressure the trans will shift. If governor pressure is leaking down somehow it won't shift.

I'm assuming this is replaceable? How much money if it's shot?

Zach scratches his head.   Hmmm...

Could this be my all-ending problem?  I do notice that if I am in 3rd, it doesnt take much at all to get the car to kick down a gear.

Hmm... How do you adjust on our cars?!

Black Pheonix

Thanks for the tip Chris, i will have to check that out, BTY mine will go beyond redline if your all the way on it, i am assuming through all gears, because it did it to me 2-3 too.
