car stutters on acceleration

Let me run this by you:

When accelerating (even when climbing a slight incline at speed), it feels like my TGP is cutting in and out really fast. By stuttering I mean that the car accelerates with some shuddering where the car falls off and jumps back onto the acceleration curve repeatedly and really fast until I lift and maintain speed, when the stuttering just relaxes and goes away. The engine RPMs remain normal (RPMs do not fluctuate with the stuttering)

I have 4 things in mind, LMK what you think.

1) Torque converter locking and unlocking really fast?
2) Bad crank sensor?
3) X-over is shot (and well, it is :D)
4) 2 & 3 together
5) something else I may have not considered?

Thanks!

Is this WOT or at any throttle position?

What speeds does this occur at?  All speeds?  Over 40mph?  Etc....

Could be a sensor.  I'd say unplug one by one and see if it gets better.

I had a similar problem on my other car, turned out to be the O2.

If it's while you are pressing the pedal down (IE-while the pedal is moving) I'd say TPS.

My guess is if it is caused only under boost...spark plug wires or plugs or both!

Any other guesses without full details??

yeah - its only when the pedal is moving, and at any/all speeds (it doesn't always happen, but it happens a lot) both under and over boost. I had already replaced the plugs/wires already with no remedy BTW, but that was my 1st guess too...

Thanks guys! I'll start with the TPS

well I pulled the connector on the TPS and I saw that it was all fouled up with oil. I started the car with the sensor disconnected and it idled rough, fluctuated between 400-2000rpm until it just died. I cleaned the connector, reseated it - it started fine, and I took her out onto a back road out in the cornfields and wound her up flat-out. Nice and smooooth :) I think I am going to replace the TPS anyway just because it's a good idea, but I thought you all would like to hear what the problem was.

Thanks for the help!

More follow up on this issue

I did still notice some choppy acceleration after checking and replacing the TPS. Not as bad, but still not *quite* right.

Well the other day something blew and all of the sudden I was on 4 cylinders. Turns out 1 of the 3 ignition coils burnt up. Replaced all 3 coils with new and NOW, oh yes NOw she moves with no weird pants-seat feelings through the acceleration curve. She goes like a scalded dog :)
I never noticed how much performance I had lost over the last year while this was slowly deteriorating, but when you get it all back it is suprising.

Anyway, just in case anyone looks through this thread with the questions about the same weird symtoms I thought it'd be good to post the final real solution for posterity.

I have the exact same problem with mine. It was fine untill last night after TPS replacement(minus a little hesitation), but now it runs like crap. I'll have to try changing out the coils again. I used some others I had before.

My coils went 2 1/2 years ago.  The car was stalling and missing all over the place.

BTW when is it a good idea to replace the coils?  I've had mine in since then, about 25,000 miles.

My car had the original coils on it when I bought it.  I replaced them when I was having the issues with my car not running right, but they worked good when I removed them.  I would say you have PLENTY of life left in your coils.

Thank you so much. I've been having tha same exact problems with my car. I've been through so much coils I can't even remember tha amount. But yeah, I got tha same problems you all have. I'ma try and replace tha TPS, then give it and all around tune-up which I've been needing cause its been a while. Again think everyone, I hope this fixxes my problem(s)....

I'll give you an update on how my car iz running after I do this, Thanx...
