If he runs with a cracked pipe that extra air making his o2 tell the computer to run rich will also plug his catalytic converter, and running rich all the time will have excess fuel diluting the lubricating oil around his piston rings and piston skirt, eventually mixing back into the engine reducing its lubricating properties.

In the long run it will eventually damage some things, but now would be a good time to get saving and ready to get some of these parts installed, O2 sensors aren't that cheap if I remember correctly.. almost $30.  I don't necessarily know how long they typically lasted, but when I got my car with 100k I replaced it because it was running awful, tons of black smoke, I think that I went through 2 by the end of the first year I had it.  Replaced the pipe and haven't done it since.

In comparison 02 sensors for these cars are cheap.  Heated 02 sensors are around $100 IIRC, be glad we don't have those.  I believe my dad paid around $110-120 for the one for his GTP, but I could be wrong.  I wouldn't consider $30 cheap, but its much cheaper than it could be.

Yeah, that's about the going rate for the newer O2s.  As for the 3.1 O2s, the aftermarket ones can be picked up pretty cheap.  I believe the Bosch ones are about $17 or so.  But I've heard time and time again that aftermarket O2 sensors are complete crap.  Jeff M offers the GM ones for $40, which is the price I get them for from my Pontiac dealer parts guy, so I know Jeff is basically selling them for wholesale (which is as cheap as it's going to get for the average consumer).  The retail is around $65 on it, which is what everyone else would be paying for it from the dealer, so I'd definitely pick it up from Jeff if you're going OEM.

if i were to take this to a mechanic or a dealer for the install of the xover, how long would it take for installation? (warmed way up to almost 50 degreees today, started just fine, didnt die, still exhaust smell under hood, it seemed to run hot when idleing, no heater a/c nothing, no air on, and the fans would have to come on now and then, and it had a VERY rough idle, and no black smoke

It depends on the mechanic. Just make sure you know your mechanics know how to turn a wrench. My mechanic did it for the first time on my car, and took him 2-days [he wanted to make sure everything was right and followed Jeff's instructions step-by-step] to swap the x-overs.

oh the xovers come w/ instuctions? cool, so im lookin at some big money to install

considering that most places charge $45-65 per hour, and at least a 6 hour job, although the books probably say it will be more, you will be looking at at least $300-$400 to have a dealer change it.  find someone that will do it for you that has some talent with tools, or talk with someone close to you and maybe they will do if for a reasonable fee.  I could seriously change that pipe and have it running again in 4-5 hrs tops.  A mechanic that halfway knows what he's doing should be able to match that.
