Well, the starter on the TGP is pretty much toast, now.  It had heat saturation issues prior to today, and then this morning, the only way I could get the car to start after the 2 minute trip to the parts store to pick up a CV axle was to hit it with a hammer while an employee turned the ignition.  So while it's in getting the CV axle done, I was thinking of having them just throw on a new starter.  However, I remember reading something about being able to use a starter off of newer GMs.  Smaller, lighter, and high torque?  If so, which ones can be used?  And if someone who has successfully done this has a part number, it would be most appreciated!

Mine came from a newer 3100, other cars that have them are the 3400 GA's among a bunch of others.  The old one is huge in comparison!!! And the sound when starting makes it much quieter.  Just get yourself a used unit, they are very easy to replace as long as you can get under the car safely.

Sweet!  Thanks for the link/info.  Hopefully this thing will hold for a few days till I can score one at a decent price.  This car's been racking up the repair bill the last few weeks.  If I was positive I was going to keep it, I wouldn't mind one bit.  But since I'm quite possibly getting rid of it (I know for a fact I'm getting rid of my other 3 cars), it means it's just that much more money I'm going to be loosing on it.  :icon_frown:

My new starter came from a 2.2L Cavalier. GM used the high torque starter in alot of different applications.

Ithink I paid $12 for mine, but I pulled it myself.  But when it's not your car, and you don't care about the wiring, you just snip.  Took me about 10 minutes.  Definetely a good investment.

So just to confirm I'm not getting the wrong thing, this would work?

And there's no issues what so ever with these new starters on our cars?
