If the Daytona Pace Car had a manual transmission, I doubt that they'd have overdrive at all, so maybe I was told it had to do 140mph in third (or fourth) in case top gear failed.  It was long ago, and I don't remember exactly. That information about Daytona 500 Pace Car was extended in one phone call which lasted about 30 minutes. A lot was said. I remember some of the details, but many are vague now.

Also, I don't believe GM left the Days of Thunder Pace Car chips in any cars that they were going to sell eventually to someone on America's highways. That would be nuts.  LOL

if the actual Pace Car had a manual transmission it was more than likely the Getrag 282 (since the 284 wasn't released until '91)...but that's not to say it has the same gearing as my Getrag 282.  some 282s have different speed gears but all of the V6 versions of the 282 have 3.61:1 FDR.

the Getrag 282 actually does has "overdrive" IOW 5th gear is .81:1 so 19% overdrive in the W-body V6 version of the Getrag 282.  the 5th gear in J/L-body Getrag 282/V6 cars have a 28% overdrive.  i myself have had my Cutlass up to 112mph in 4th the other day before having to go to 5th gear.  after going to 5th it had NO problem getting up to 125mph but then i got out of it (125mph is too crazy anyway).  i think 145mph in 5th would be NO problem but due to gearing i think it would be limited to around ~150mph.

i've heard of farily stock TGPs getting up to 150mph (with an auto) but i dont' know if that was done in 3rd or 4th?

Jeff M said he did 150+ but eased into 4th and feathered it so it wouldnt kill the tranny.

not off hand i was a bit afraid to look down at it and take my eyes off the road

If they mentioned 140mph in third gear, it was almost surely a 4T60 in the pace car. A getrag 282 would require you to spin the motor past 9,000rpms to hit 140mph in 3rd. With our autos, it would take slightly over 6100rpms to get to 140mph. We're limited to "128mph" by our rev limiter/fuel cut in third gear(57XX rpms). You could simply bump up that limiter on a modded chip and 140 would be possible...

All this talk of a "Pace Car" chip sounds like folklore and something we need to submit to MythBusters!

There is ABSOLUTELY no reason for a pace car in the NASCRAP circuit to run 140MPH.

Welcome.

What kind of interior did the pace car come with? Tan or gray, did it have special baging in the interior? I know the Indy Berettas do...just wondering.

And about the pace car chip beeing special...I really woun't really care. But it would be intresting to see what kind of things they did.
Its prob a hot chip setup with high boost at low throttle and high spark advance. Along with diactivated "safety" features. If it were a 3 bar..then it might be something to look at..but not all that speacial. I would consider Mega Squirt before even doing what Jeff M did to get a copy of the pace car chips and hacks.

As far as pace cars go..well GM did seem to overkill its pace cars, like the turbo Quad olds, The Original beretta with exotic parts. So who knows really untill you look at the rules and regulations for a pace car for those years.

I guess one of the moderators has put "Checking Engine" beneath my name.  Not sure why.

Re: The Indy 500 Pace Car -- that was never mine nor did I ever see it except in photos.  No idea what it looked like inside.

Re: My "Days of Thunder" pace car (apparently there were fivve of these) -- the only difference I could tell were the five holes in the rear section of the roof where the track light bar was mounted, and one small hole (about1/2") in the black console.  My car had tan leather seats.  Supposedly, the only differences between "Days of Thunder" pace cars and normal 1990 TGP's was the hotter chip and the 160? thermostat.  The dealer told me as soon as I saw it that it had been used as a pace car for the movie and was trucked to some car shows here nad there.  It had never been titled until I bought it.

Hope these facts clear things up.

Larry relax

your title under your name changes the more posts you get, nothing personal.

everyone has been "checking engine" at one point or another and it will change again automaticly the more posts you make.
