Using 5W30 in the TGP

Ok, so Ive been running 10W30 synthetic in the TGP ever since I bought it 3 yrs ago, but I'm thinking of switching to 5W30 synthetic, so the oil is a bit thinner at cold startup.

It takes a second for the oil pressure gauge to jump up on cold startup, and I'm thinking 5W30 might get pumped up to pressure a bit quicker.

So my question is, is anyone running 5W30, and is the oil thickness the same between 5W30 and 10W30 at operating temp?

I don't want the oil getting too thin when everything is hot.

The first digit(s) before the 'w' is at cold start up weight, after the "w" is when at operating temps.  If your temps outside are below 10*F many times throughout the season then going to the 5w30 would be beneficial for your engine upon start up.  Otherwise, 10w30 is fine.

well I am in Canada....

but I dont drive it in the winter. I just start it up every month or so.

Thats what I wanted to hear anyway, next time I change it I'll drop 5W30 synthetic in it.

I pretty much use them interchangeably anyway, since I can never remember which I used last *shrug* :icon_lol: can't hurt anything.

you dont have much to worry about there, in fact it might not be a bad idea using the euro 0w40 that mobil1 offers during the cold months.  They use it in the Saab turbo engines year round. 

I run 5w-30 Mobil1 synthetic in my TGP.  The only difference is how fast it gets to criticals when its cold.  The hot operating range is negligible between the two weights you listed.

I also run 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic with an AC Delco filter.  Like others have said, you want oil flowing as quickly as possible to all critical parts upon startup.  That is where the lighter oil is better.
