I just bought a 90 red TGP with 115k on it.. I havent yet seen it in person but I know it needs the bellows repaired. Bad thing is I am right in the middle of dumping the Quad 4 in my 1994 Z26 to make it a 3500 5 speed. If you have one of these ready to go this winter, I'm definitely going to pick it up and I can ship the old one.

2010 Malibu LT(Z) - 2.4L 6 sp Auto (DD)

93 Beretta parts car and 96 Z26 (X2)

How do I know if mine needs it??  As far as I know its never been replaced, but I dont hear or smell exhaust leak.

GOT2B GM

Long story short, if its an original pipe with the heat shielding in place, it'll be cracked.

Typical symptoms are: running rich, idling poorly, exhaust scent / exhaust leaking ticking noise emitting from under the hood.

Mine runs rich, ticking, etc.  The previous owner had strips of metal welded around the bellows to seal it up.  No flex.  The ERG tube was blown open in several spots and welded and blown open again.  I replaced it, but the threads on the nipple for the EGR were torn up.  Now I think it is leaking from there.  Should I replace the whole thing, or just weld the EGR tube onto it?  I don't know how important the flex is on it.

Sounds like it's been hacked up pretty good.

Bottom line, if it doesn't have flex bellows, it WILL crack. No matter how much you weld it back together.

The crossover's close proximity to the extreme heat of the turbocharger, means that it sees quite a bit of expansion and contraction with the heat cycles of day to day driving.

Both the TGP's I've owned came to me with bad crossovers, one was original and totally blown wide open, the other someone tried to weld cracks and bits on it. Cars never ran right without them sealed right. I'd at least strongly consider getting a rebuilt one, just for long term reliability. I did it years back now but Its just one less problem to deal with, totally worth it.

I am leaning towards a new one.  $250 is a good deal too.  This car is going to turn into a money pit, I can see.  I wasn't sure what the purpose of the bellows was, since the turbo is mounted to it and there shouldn't be flex in the pipe.  But heat expansion makes sense.  I will find room in the budget for it.  I've never seen someone weld a strap around the bellows before.  I had a feeling that was going to be trouble.
