Has anyone tried this?

I just wondering if anyone has tried to wire in one of the newer CD players (like from a '97-'03 Grand Prix) into a TGP?  Would it work with the steering wheel radio controls?

No, it wouldn't work.

The newer radio controls use an analog signal, while the older ones (TGP) use a digital signal bus. I'm not sure what it would take to get it to work.

I know there is always the PAC SWI-X steering wheel interface but I was hoping to keep from adding anything else electronic wise.  I'm using one in my 2000 GP now and it works great but that would kinda defeat the point of having a somewhat "stock" stereo.  I'm going to have to do some research and see if there is a way.

I think you can use any 1.5 din stereo.

Yeah, pretty much you can use any 1.5 din. I know pioneer and alpine make nice units.

The PAC has one that will work with the older controls, I don't know which one it is but it does exist.

I can understand the somewhat stock stereo thing. I could have bought an aftermarket stereo for my F150, however, I just got the Mach radio from an explorer because i wanted a 'stock' one. However, I don't think the alpine unit would look too out  of place in the TGP dash, and i'm pretty sure you could get most of the radio controls to work. In fact, I think the alpine would look more at home than the actual TGP cd-player does!

There are two things I was trying to accompish with this.  One was keeping the "stock" look and second was trying to save a little cash.  I would love to get one of the Alpine units but just not now.  If anyone knows how to interface the steering wheel controls to the newer style cd like I was talking about without the use of the SWI, please let me know.

Can you replace the factory stereo and still keep the steering wheel contorols functioning?  Anyone do it?

It doesn't run anymore.

Chris A

Replace it with an AFTERMARKET stereo?

Thats the point of the PAC unit. It interfaces the SWC to the infared remote control of the aftermarket stereo.

What kind of aftermarket do you recommend?  I have this annoying popping sound that comes through the speakers, and I know its the factory deck.  What do you think?

I have always liked Alpine.  They have a clean look and are one of the best head units out there.  And, as mentioned before, they make 1.5 DIN sizes.  Just my opinion though.

This may have been answered in this thread but I don't see it. I was wondering if anyone has tried to replace "just" the CD part of the OEM AM/FM/CD player with one from a newer model. The CD player is a seperate case from the reciever and can be unpluged and removed. I pulled mine apart tried to fix it. It will spin the cd but will not read/play.
Maybe???? If anyone has a working one on the shelf..   let's talk.

I think it's been done with a cd player from a 94 Firebird, by a member on here.  Maybe 6000ste?

Indeed.  I've used the same one in both the 6000 and GP STEs, and  both were plug and play.  The only thing you'll need is the slightly different version of steering wheel controls in order for the buttons to work 100% perfectly.  They look identicle, just have some different features on the buttons.  Like the middle (where it's blank on the tape deck version) there is an "on/off" switch for the stereo.  To its right, the "seek" button also allows you to skip and repeat CD tracks on this version of controls.  And to its left, the "stop/play" button allows you to switch between CD and radio.

It will work even without these controls, you just won't be able to control the CD features.  Plus, I noticed when I hit "fade" or "balance" with the old controls, it did work, but it wouldn't change the screen to show the bar moving back and fourth for amount faded/balanced.  It was wierd.  But it worked just fine for me for almost a year till I found the proper CD controls.  I must say, though, it's a hell of a lot more fun being able to skip the tracks at the touch of a button.

Here is the stereo I'm using:

I know y9ou had mentioned price being a concern. Honestly, if it is a big concern, you are looking at the wrong direction. To purchase a ne factory unit would be WAY more than going with a good Aftermarket, and most of the units in salvage yards are overpriced and usually damaged. At least around me they are.

You can get a good pioneer with the steering wheel remote for around $250

Man this post is old!  I can't believe it came back to life.  Anyway, the reason I had mentioned it in the first place was because I was thinking of moving my CD player from my 2000 GTP to my Turbo.  But now that 6000 says you can use a CD from a Firebird I might just try that!  Is 94 the only year that will work?
