It won't hurt the engine if you only rebuild the turbo.  These turbos seem to have a problem with seals/oil burning.

I've only worked on 2 that had seal or bearing problems, it is usually the oil return hose about 98% of the time!!!
Oil smoke coming out the seals is caused by a restriction in the exhaust system called a plugged cat converter!

I'm gonna need another option here man, my cat's gone!  I'm thinking that maybe I should take it out, have it rebuilt, and then wrap it up nice with that shield from Summit.  How much is it ballbark, you guys know?

It doesn't run anymore.

I had my turbo rebuilt by Turbocharger.com in Dallas. Mine ran over $700 due to a crack which required special welding , then polished the insides, the waste gate controller was checked , the fittings were polished, and the it looks much better than factory. I  also got the 2 inch heat tape from Summit with the stainless straps to hold it down. It should be wrapped to hold the heat. They will tear the turbo down and inspect and let you know.  Good luck.

My car loves to smoke out sometimes too. It will be idling fine and all the sudden it will just start belching out tons of smoke until I turn it off. Then i'll turn it back on and not a trace of smoke after that.
I think I found the problem though, the computer has parameters that protect the torque converter when the engine builds boost and the car is not moving, and I had a vacuum leak that I just fixed from the coupling off the metal vacuum line that runs from the intake to the tranny.

You can check for vacuum leaks with a piece of garden hose used like a stethoscope  and listen for a hissing sound. I could hear one of my lifters ticking also :x  :bad-words:
