Title: Need help to verify 5 Speed type????
Post by: TGPilot on July 11, 2002, 12:44:22 PM
OK, I have an opportunity to buy a 1989 Grand Prix SE with a 5-speed. The guy says it is a 2.8l...does it matter that it is 2.8 or 3.1? Is it the same bell housing? How can I verify that it is a Getrag 282? I can get it cheap and fast... 8)

The 2.8 and 3.1 are almost identical. They use the same tranny.

That's not much help man :?  Pontiac is showing two seperate part numbers for the 5 speed that was in the 1990 STE and the 1989 Grand Prix SE. I am assuming the STE had the 282 and it was obviously a 3.1. I really don't want to drive to Salt Lake and pick a car that is useless to me.

Does anyone know of how to cross reference these tranny's or if there is a way of looking at the tranny to determine if it is a Getrag282 that will bolt on to a 3.1?

Thanks all! 8)

I don't see what the difference between the 2.8 and 3.1 would be.The blocks should be the same. If I am wrong, sorry for giving you false info.

It doesn't surprise me that the part numbers are different from different years. There may be a minor insignifigant difference. However, the 2.8 and 3.1 motors for all intents and purposes are  the same. And having been there in the past, the 89 2.8 5 sp will make for a fine donor car and getting the WHOLE car is an excellent way to go. The 282 was the only tranny used with the 2.8 in 89 on the wbody. I don't know how you can determine it from other trannies, because i've never really delt with them. The later 282's I think changed the way the slave cylinder was mounted. But again, i'm not postive.

Rest assured, if what this guy is telling you is its a 2.8 5 sp you have what you need.

Chris...

Thank you very much for your detailed email...that is the reassurance I was looking for. I am dying to put a 5 speed in "my" car and was pretty sure about the donor car. Thanks much guys...Kenny 8)
