My brother and I are rebuilding the cars at the same time. Well my oldest brother sold his 88(I think its a 87??? the dam same thing..anyway) T-bird Turbo Coupe to my older brother(which helps me alot--and found this site and the old site a while back...he also post here too sometimes for me anyway again) and is rebuilding his engine with a Turbo off a Chevy Dually diesel truck. He is installing a Ranger roller cam, Esslinger antipump lifters, cooling fan on the IC, Gutting the intake and porting the lower, 37lbs injectors(stock is 35, he also has 45lbs at his desposal),planning on 20psi, Cold intake, ported manafold,3in all after Turbo, and has a 5spd. All good for around 360 plus horses I think off the 2.3l
I have my Beretta the 3.1 getting rebuild with ported heads(decited to port the intake side too, three angle job), GenIII rockers, ported manafolds-intake and exhaust...not too much to port), stock turbo for now, no IC yet still, stock TGP injectors, raised boost to 11 psi(more if I had the IC), 3in pipes after DP, still thinking of installing the porformance "turbo cam" I posted a while back,Cold intake, and a auto to boot. ???hp .... more than stock TGP no kidding...
Who would you all think would win in the 1/4 mile?
I know I migh have more TQ, but he would have more HP.
Do you think if I were to get a TGP with the same mods what would it run in the 1/4?
What do you people recomend?
The Turbo Coupe does weigh around 3600-3800lbs. So you do have weight advantage over him. Remove your rear seats and spare tire.
He does have a 5-speed, if he can drive he has a slight advantage right there.
Do you not have the stock TGP intercooler? I'd suggest buying a front mount intercooler off of ebay.
My friend has an '88 Turbocoupe(5 speed) and he has a full 3" exhaust(no cat), fan mounted under factory intercooler(or interheater as he likes to call it), walbro 255 HP, ranger roller cam/followers, short throw shifter. He was running 19 psi, and I think he had to drill something out on the IHI in order to run more than 15 psi(not sure). Anyways, over 18 psi is way past the max efficiency of the the IHI. Last year he ran 15.0s consistently with a 2.2 60'. He was getting a lot of detonation so he pulled out some timing. I believe that 2.3 computers do not have progressive knock retard so when they see knock they pull out all of the timing(not good). Anyways, it was suggested to him on turboford.org to lower his boost to 15-16 psi range and run some more timing. Bam, he went from a 15.0 to a 14.8 and his engine has 190,000 miles on it too!! Anyways, your brother's car is stick so he should have the IHI, unless he upgraded to the auto turbo which is a T3. I wouldn't run 20 psi as mentioned above, and I really don't see a reason to run the bigger injectors either. 2.3t computers are dumb as shit when it comes to fueling and they run rich as hell at WOT.
My TGP and my friends Turbocoupe is a very good matchup, in fact when we race on the highway we stay damned close. Whoever gets on it first is usually who wins. Now, I would think you would have an advantage, because your car is lighter than a TGP. I say you could take him, but I would get an intercooler in there pronto as it's going to be the best investment you can make to ensure your victory.
Now, my friend also has another 2.3t that he's building for his '91 ranger. He already had a turbo ranger, but he wants an all out drag ranger now. He has the esslinger aluminum head that just came out not to long ago($$$). Right now, he's stuck on the 5.0 mustang hoopla, but he's getting back into 2.3t again.
So I would beat him...thats cool. As long as he dosn't have a ace up his sleve...
When he bought it off my older brother it had the T3 off the early merker or Tbird. It did come originaly with the IHI and IC. That IHI didn't come with the car the first time it came to the family or a number two piston..hehehe DETONATION. We reclocked the T3 and choped down its compressor pipe to be able to use the IC off the IHI. He was running 15psi at stock timming. It had ran 16.397 (too long at the staging pits..IC turned into IHeater like you said  )... We did notice valve flowt due to lifter pump up(theres no lash at all even when its cold). After 4000 it felt like crap. He didn't want to run more pressure cuz if it ain't running right ...don't mod it.
Well thanks for the info.
I hope my bro does save up for that Esslinger head too. He's been drolling all over it....literaly. He's also looking at the Volvo head.. and IC.
Yeah, whoever figured out that the volvo head would work with offset studs and crap has way too much time on their hands. The volvo head seems like way too much work would have to be done in order for it to work. I just get the esslinger head as my friend's is sweet looking and it should flow a ton of air. Plus, it a bolt on deal 8)
Was wondering what's better about the volvo head and from which motor it comes from (volvo motor).
