Title: A/C Fin removal *done*
Post by: RedZMonte on May 12, 2003, 11:51:25 AM
I finished removing the A/C fins infront of the I/C. I definatly expect alot more airflow to the I/C. the front fins where smashed and nasty. Completly blocking air flow.  Now it is opened up and ready to start working properly.

Anyone know what kind of a temp difference you should see by freeing up the flow of air to the I/C? I am sure its good for a few degree's.

I think Jeff tested the flow before and after that mod. Maybe he'll reply to this.

(Copied from my earlier post "Clearing out the AC fins for more air to Intercooler"):

"When I lived in Michigan I did this/removed fins (on a new 1990 TGP) and ran it for 4 years with summer weather on a black car, no problem with AC keeping up or too high a condensor pressure. Did the same to my next black TGP here in Minnesota with no problems in summer, and summer in both states we can and I have seen high 90's, low 100's, granted you deep southerners show 100+, but we do at least see some summer/hot weather up here in the stone cold states . After I did my black TGP here, ran some air flow tests on it, put a jumper on the fan relay socket to run the front fan (engine on so there is normal volts) and read around 150 cfm, then over 350 cfm with fins removed, it works. One last thing, that greater amount of air-flow through the intercooler also helps the turbo inlet system (clamp on K&N or) get more cooler air too!! Double win!"

I also bought a dual-temp logging digital meter to do some comparisons of heat gains/losses and this summer should get to it, but that much more air flow from my tests with just the fan shows there some good gains there, best you can get without custom IC upgrades.

Did you take the fins off of the I/C too?  What's the best way to do this?

No, you only remove the fins from the A/C Condenser because they are ovbstructing the flow of air to the I/C. the IC needs the fins to keep the air flowing straight across the core or it will not function correctly. the A/C spans the hole front of the car (rad./IC) so removing a small ammount of fins from a small section will not effect the A/C's ability to function correctly.
Here is the info on it.

Didn't I read somewhere that someone took the fins out of the I/C too?  I could swear I read that.

I have never heard that. It would hurt the performance of the I/C, I would not recomend it. If there are any bent find I would recomend getting one of the fin straighening tools and straighten the I/C Fins. but don't remove them.

What a pain in the ass this free mod is. But worth every hp :)

I just started this project today. Hopefully I'll be done by tonight.
