Title: Why is my car running rich!?
Post by: 90TGP on May 14, 2003, 05:01:27 PM
For some GD reason, my car is still running rich. There's black crap all in my exhaust tips.

I just had my spark plugs changed last year, had new Taylor wires installed last year, just had MSD coils installed last month. Do I have to replace that damn coil module?

Fuel injectors?

Even though they may run good at other levels, they may still be rich under certain boost conditions. If you haven't replaced them, I would recommend that.

Don't recall, CHIP? AIR FILTER?

I assume all the tune up stuff is new.

Chances are its not a module, wouldn't neccesarily cause a weak spark, and a rich condition.

could be a pluged cat. Just happened to mine. Power and milage went down to. Muffler shop can check this usually for free. They just burn a hole on each side of the cat and check the air flow from one end to the other.

you can also check using a lazer temp gun. the temp from the front of the cat should increase by ~150* by the time it gets to the rear of the cat. thats how emmision shops test the cat to see if its gutted or not "Converting" properly.

Stock X-over? check my reply on w-body.

OHHHH, I like that one, neat trick, I got an infra red heat gun, I will use that one to help the many who only email me (MANY never go to this or other Talk Forums for help) for some reason with power problems and rich exhaust and lack of being able to rev etc.  As you know and have said, the cracked pipe makes the engine run rich enough to plug the cats, heard of quite a few guys who found their cats plugged, even cut them open to see how bad things were melted and plugged, but for some reason still keep running with their cracked crossover pipe, and just think about that rich fuel being dumped all the time into the engine does such as diluting the engine oil, first at the rings then mixing with the rest of the oil supply, learn the hard way I guess, or stop buying stereos and fix the ride!

got that right! my crossover is cracked and my cat ended up damn near closed shut.  I cut if off and opened it up and DAMN!  I can't believe the car was even running in that condition.  I got a blown HG now though.  Car won't boost even with bcs hose removed and I can smell coolant coming out of of the tailpipe  :( !

I gutted my cat (still able to see through it) but its hollow now.. Makes a nice deep note from the exhaust :)

how did you gut it?  I tried to jam my tie rod fork through it and it wouldn't go so I cut it open (LOL).  I can get another stocker from the junkyard off a camaro for free.  I want a cat but just a hollow like yours.  I don't want any high flow units at all.  My throttle response is awesome with nothing but pipe and cherry bomb for silencer.

Hi I cut the downpip before the cat, released the next set of hangers and used a long electricians drill bit to break up the core. Then bashed it will a suitable road and finally sucked it all out with a shop vac. Use a flashlite (for the beam) and look into the cat for results. If all or most of the cat is not removed , it will rattle and may also be blown down further in to exhaust causing problems.
I have NYS inspection soon and plan to use a general purpose cat with flanges , then go straight after aigin after. The car is running like a jet right now and everyonce in awhile during hard acceleration I will feel major hesitation. I'm thinking spark blo out (.045) Otherwise its amazingly fast!
