Title: the verdict is in
Post by: Air TGP on May 22, 2003, 02:22:55 PM
i just took my tgp with 138K on it to the track and it was kinda dissapointing. for a while the best i could get was a 16.56 . this was really up setting after all the reading i was doing on how fast these cars are. later that night i took the air cleaner off and pulled of a 16.16 @81MPH  which was kinda amazing to pick that much time up :? . but still disapointing.  so later as the night went on, i started bring the car off the line at 3k rpm and  it really picked up. as the night went on i got a 15.86 @ 85.18 mph. i also noticed that the boost gauge was reading about 10 psi, which was kinda impressive. but over all i wasn't impressed with its performance , so now i think i'll order the top gun 160 chip and see how much that helps.

You're not going off the stock boost gauge are you? Because it's not very accurate. Unless you live in the mountains, you're not gonna pull that kind of boost. The ECM cuts of the fuel before it gets that high.

Dude - order that chip and then tell us about it.  You won't be disappointed.

i was going off the stock boost guage, but from what i was reading on how the computer restricts eveything, i was kinda thinking it wasn't right.

No elevation listed on their website, If I remember correctly (grew up around there) it is 500Ft or close to that.

My time slip is here as well as the other crappy picture I took of the TGP while in the parking lot at the track.

BTW, the aol servers aren't that slow(at least for me when I've uploaded pics and viewed them from places other then home), it's just that the pics are not hosted anymore.

It was on the car when I got it, I believe Rick(the previous owner) stated that he received the badge w/ his chip from Jeff M. 8)

Well if you get the car fixed and bring it to the track again...when the tree starts coming down (assuming you're not bracket racing, because this will not net you a good reaction time) brake torque to about 3k...because if you take too much longer than that the computer will pull timing and boost until a little bit into 2nd gear (from what I've found)...but with the stock chip brake torquing is necessary to pull of decent 60' times, so you definately need to do it.  Also, hold the car in 2nd gear to 6000-6100rpms because this will put the engine closer to the powerband in 3rd when it shifts.  Those two things should help you out a little.  Also, try putting a K&N filter on the turbo (the stock intake is very restrictive as you found out), and put new plugs in it (I use AC delco R42LTS plugs gapped at .042")..this should gain you some time.  Also, try dropping the exhaust..if you pick up a lot of time your catalytic convertor is probably plugged/partly plugged and should be replaced or gutted.  I have heard that some TGP's only run low 16's stock, but from what I have found, they can all run mid 15's with decent plugs, wires, intake, and most importantly of all, driver skill, mine went high 14's...you just have to do all the proper maintenance and at shorter than recommended intervals.

well i started workin on the head gaskets and i got a set of 3.1 heads and i did a little port and polish job to them and i'm going to put 1.6 rockers on it also. and the exhaust rusted off while sitting this summer so i'm gona run a straight pipe from the turbo back. i;m also going to see whati can do about making my own crossover and possibly putting a bigger turbo or maybe respooling the orgional.  i'm also working on some ram air set up from under the car.
