Title: turbo problems
Post by: maddux31 on June 21, 2003, 09:25:38 AM
does anyone know what may cause the engine to backfire through the intake manifold to the turbocharger.  I posted some problems with my car about a month ago and I've finally had time to do some investigating on it.  I took it to a rebuild guy and he said that it definitely is backfire through the intake and nothing in the lower or top end.  The motor is lacking boost when I try to give it throttle like the wastegate is being manipulated by the backfire.  Somebody help me, this has to have happened to one of you guys before.  Thanks to all who replied to my last series of questions.  Does this have something to do with the wastegate actuator???

Why do you think its backfiring through the intake?

About the only way for this to happen is if the plug wires are wrong. The only other thing I can think that would sound this way is a burnt valve.

hey chris, I have no idea why it is doing this but the guy that i talked to did mention a valve could be the problem.  The plug wires have ran fine since i bought the thing 3 months ago in texas so i know that it shouldn't be that.  It is getting very frustrating because there is a noise from the top end but it sounds liike somethin loose in the alternator.  I'm going to remove the intercooler to throttle body hose and pipe and se if i can get any fire to come out of the throttle body.  going outside right now.

About 2 weeks ago mine backfired a couple times. Turned out to be a bad ignition module.

g.d.m.f.tgp i think that it is something in the head, i see no flame and feel no output through the intake manifold so i'm guessing that it is somehting like a valve,   the intake is sucking air even when i here the noise and if it were actually backfiring i would feel it or see it coming out of the intake--wouldn't i?....i think it is about time to upgrade the heads (gen III or cast better/easier?), get the topgun 160 chip and change the crossover.  car only has 68,000 on it, what a shame.   anybody got any suggestions on the heads and what i might pay; how much fabrication will have to be done with genIII?....have a k&n filter, 160 thermostat, throttle body bypass mod, and a.c. fins removed mod.

The manifolds have to be modified to accomadate the D-Shapped exhaust port if you want to go with GEN III heads.

Personally, I'm waiting for Jeff M. to release his custom hi-flow heads and the new topgun chip :D I will be putting my order in as soon as they come out! I'm also waiting for the tranny rebuild kit....

any idea about what jeff is going to be charging for a set of those heads and how soon they'll be available?  i'm probably going to put the car back in the garage for the time being and see how much all of the things i want to do are going to cost, then do everything at once and hopefully have it back out for spring 04.  that's a long wait but i work too many hours to be able to hit this thing as hard and as fast as i want to and it is my first teardown and rebuild project on a fwd v6.  with the help of all you folks here i'm sure i'll come out of it satisfied.

Last I heard, he thought the chip and heads would be done by this fall, but I never heard a price mentioned.
