HELP!! Mu car was idling in the driveway and all of the sudden lost all oil pressure!! The lifters are ticking like crazy, but I am sure the bottom end is ok. No knocks or anything, I was sitting in the car when the pressure dropped, just getting ready to leave.
I just redid the top of the engine about 2800 miles ago, due to a blown head gasket. The bottom end was fine, and I have taken it all the way down to chicago and back without any engine probs(although the trans started slipping, but oh well). Any ideas?
I would start with the oil pump, or maybe the sending unit, but I don't know. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge will give some info.
Don't miss the obvious and check the oil.
Make sure its full and doesn't have any foreing material in it.
The sending unit is probably ok, but at any rate wouldn't cause the lifters to tick
Its a long shot but easier to check than the pump, is the oil pump drive under the throttle body. If the gear has stripped, or the drive shaft is stripped then that could cause your problem, but if either of those are damaged, its probably because of an oil pump failure.
Its possible the oil pump pickup tube has either come loose from the pump or the pickup is clogged with goo. You will have to drop the pan to check either of these which means dropping or at least partially dropping the oil pan.

I checked the oil, plenty of it and clean. I'm going to check the oil pump drive tonight.
It's funny, I've owned 2 older GP's now, and they both did the same thing. The one we got for my fiance did it getting on the interstate and she didnt have much time to react, motor went bye bye. The TGP did it idling with me in the car.
Heres a little more info. For the couple weeks before hand, when I did a cold start, it would peg the oil pressure guage. After it warmed up it seemed ok. The day it died, I watched the guage flutter a bit, then go up, then drop. I'm thinking the pump is gone, but I am hoping for the best. Anyone ever change a pump in these before? What is required to do this?
You have to drop the subframe. I usually remove it because I have the tools, some just lower the subframe. Then remove the lower engine mount bracket, then remove the starter and oil pan. Its quite a job, but its doable. There are worse and there are lots easier.

I feel like an idiot... When we put the top end back together, we forgot to upt the clamp down on the oil pumd drive on the top of the engine. I took the one off the parts car, slid the oil pump drive back in after making sure everything was ok, and put the clamp back on... Vioala! Oil pressure!
I guess I shouldnt work on big jobs with less than half the required time to do it.
Sometimes you feel like a dumbazz.......
Hey! Check the obvious eh?! Glad it was easy!

And here I thought I was all good..
Well, I've been driving it all day and seems to run fine, so I guess I did catch it in time to prevent internal damage. WOOHOO!! I was missing being able to drive the car!!
