Gotta love the GM Auto Trans for the gp. I am getting ready to install yet another friggin tranny. Does anybody know if there is a kit I can get to rebuild the one in there to hold more hp? I will be shooting for the 350 hp mark, and I would like to be able to us OD. So one that has a stronger OD clutch pack would be great. Thanx
Jeff M is currently developing a kit to rebuild a turbo specific transmission. I don't think it's ready yet though. I myself have had NO problems with transmissions in any of my GPs so far....and I have 5 of them  Going for number 6 at the end of the month  :D
Whats happening to yours? Are you burning up 4th gear?
While at work today I heard there's a company in Texas where you can send a clutch, etc and they will form one out of brass for you. If anyone is interested I can get the company name and #.
It's smoking all gears. The thing just slips like mad now. But, yeah, the OD was the fist to go in the original trans. I had that one rebuilt, and I don't know if there was a problem in workmanship, but it got torn to shreds the first time I put my foot in it. The third was fine for about 1500 miles and I toasted it with the cruise set to 75 on my way to chicago. It started to slip in OD and by the time I got it home, I had nothing. Fourth Trans didnt even make it down the street. I got another rebuild done that SUPPOSEDLY had some work done to prevent this again, and 3200 miles later, here I am. The bad part is, the shop that did the trans last time did the one in my Daytona Turbo, and it held 390 HP for 3 years before I got rid of it, and didnt go untill about the 5th or 6th reverse drop my dad did (darn kids...lol). So I know it's not the shop. I've talked to a lot of the local GP people and most of them have had similar trouble. But the GTP's get a beefer trans kit. We're stuck
Jeff, HELP!! :)
If you trust the shop, and they are familiar with the 4t60 or 440t4, then they should be doing a good job.
You probably need to start looking elsewhere for the problem. I would start with the cooler and lines. Make sure they are getting good flow. I assume you flushed the cooler? If so it may be a good idea to upgrade replace. I had a problem with a couple of tranny failures and I think it was because of heat. We kept burning up 4th and welding the trans (4th fused together and shift to first ... instant trans brake!)
Next check the modulator. Has the shop been able to take measurements of the line pressure? If they can get some of this data maybe there is a problem lurking there.
Chris
Well, yet another idiot moment for me. I checked the trans cooler, and sure enough, it needs to be flushed or replaced... DOH!!!!
You'll have to forgive me since I usually only deal with manuals, and never thought about that. Although, the trans shop should have!!!!
No need to feel bad! If we all had the answers we wouldn't be here!
I would suggest new as its hard to flush parallel flow coolers.
