Title: Proud of the TGP
Post by: LukeZ34 on July 07, 2003, 10:57:51 AM
In my 21 years of existance, I don't think I've ever done this much traveling then I've done in June.  I Took it to Manhattan (ks) in early June to visit some friends there. Then the next weekend, to Wichita for a wedding. The weekend after that to Springfield MO for the W-Body Gathering, and this past weekend to Kansas City for another wedding. Everywhere I went, the TGP performed perfectly despite a few minor problems. Had an SES light (overboost) once on the way to Wichita, and that turned out to be a popped vacuum line on the turbo for the boost controller, easy fix. When I bought the car, the cruise system wasn't connected. All it needed was the throttle cable, so I picked up one from a wrecked 89 GP and installed it just before I left for Kansas City. It worked flawlessly until I got to the Manhattan exit. I lost cruise and also my AC started blowing out the lower vents. Right away, I knew I blew another vaccum line, so I pulled over to check it out. Unfortunatly, the little vacuum line that popped itself off of the cruise module, sprung back and planted itself against the back side of the turbo.. melting it. Oddly enough, when I got back in the car to leave, I had AC controls again. I was able to fix that problem when I got to KC by stopping a O'reileys auto parts store and getting some replacement vacuum line. $3 later, everything was fixed again, and I made it back home Sunday with cruise. The car also got much better gas milage running with the cruise, which is good for my limited budget.

I guess my whole point behind this post is to say that I finally own a car that I am proud of, and can trust taking on long road trips. I never had this trust in any of the 2 previous w-bodies that I've owned. They all had their little problems that always kept you on the edge while traveling. It's nice to not have to worry about that anymore.
Hopefully this winter I can start cleaning her up even more. My goal is to make the car look as good as it did when it rolled off the showroom floor. It'll be a lot of work, but as rare as these cars are, it's worth it.

I drove it from Colorado to Florida and back for Christmas and felt more secure in it than if I had rented a brand new car. It makes me feel real good that you like the car so much and are taking care of it!! Maybe someday I will build another 5-Speed TGP but Black on Grey...8)

Funny, I sold the car because I wanted something more reliable.   :x

Glad you like her.
