can i jet coat the exterior of my turbo (both compressor and exhaust sides), down pipe, and exhaust manifolds or do the interiors need to be jet coated to protect any welds from being destroyed from the interior heat. the way it has been explained to me, jet coating exterior surfaces will increase interior temperatures to a point that some integrity of welds may be compromised. the turbo has very high temps already and i don't want to tear it down to jet coat. doing the interior of the exhaust manifolds and down pipe doesn't seem like that big of a deal but the turbo seems a bit more work. if anyone knows about this process or what it might cost thanks in advance, Dale.
You will have to break the turbo down to have it jet coated.
I was afraid of that, so is the alternative to not jet coat it and just buy a new turbo blanket form summit? I'm assuming that if I was to break the turbo down that I will have to put new seals in it, or is there a way to reuse them. Basically is it worth jet coating the turbo or just rewrapping the thing in a new blanket??? I destroyed my blanket when I tore my engine down last month. by the way Chris, I never found anything out of the ordinary in my heads or the top end of the motor with that popping noise and everything in the lower end seems to be fine so I'm going to put it back together, including new crossover from Jeff, and hope that it is something simple after all the work I did for "FUN"!!! Probably replace all the sensors and plugs/wires when I reassemble it. Sorry about my rambling in this thread.
I totally rebuilt everything under the hood and used a heat tape from Summit racing on the large braided exhaust downpipe and rear half of the turbo. It looks great. The blanket around the front of the turbo was intact and reused. However I'm going to remove it to keep it cooler since the turbo was totally done over also. However I'm going to wrap the intercooler output pipe to TBI with the remainder of the heat tape to maintain coolness. The pipe is noticeably warmer as you get to the TBI. Otherwise, the car is amazing. Good luck
No, you can just unbolt the exhaust housing and send it out to be coated. Not a big deal if you don't break any bolts.

That's not the easiest task either :wink: I just rebuilt my turbo, and it was a PITA getting some of those exhaust housing bolts off. :roll: I wish I would've had the time to have it jet coated...but the turbo had to go right back on the car :cry:
where do you go to get something jet coated? and what would be a good price? For example maybe like the ic to tb pipe? thanks
I thought of powdercoating the intercooler to TBI pipe but after touching it after a drive I realized this pipe should actually be insulated to keep it cool. I had leftover heat tape and applied it to the pipe and it looks great and keeps it cool. I'll go for performance anyday over looks.
I thought maybe jet hot would insulate it from outside heat, but i guess it keeps heat from excaping? But the idea is to keep the pipe cool
I'm having my intake (lower and upper), compressor side of turbo, and front valve cover ceramic coated in aluminuum color and my exhaust manifolds, exhaust side of turbo, and Jeff M. crossover ceramic coated in black. The price the guy quoted me was 500.00. He will blast everything with 100 grain aluminum oxide for prepping all the parts. I was thinking of having the aluminum parts polished but the 35.00/hr price on the polishing before coating was going to put me over 1,000.00 and my wife would have killed me if she ever found the receipt. Does anyone know if the welds on the crossover will withstand the heat from doing this to it. The guy will not do the inside of anything in front of the turbo, so the heat will be held in when I shut the motor off. He told me that if any irregularities occur in the process and something unseen came loose that it would have adverse affects on the turbo. Ya, we don't want any of that happening, but he is the only person around Omaha that does these type of coatings, so he's getting my money unless someone knows some reason that this should not be done. Example....heat stress on crossover welds, heat from exhaust manifolds warping aluminum heads, etc........ anybody know anything please reply and thanks in advance, Dale Malcolm.
