Title: Engine cuts out
Post by: god910 on July 28, 2003, 09:55:13 AM
Okay, so maybe you guys can help w/ this situation. I just bought Manualturbo's car, some of you may know what's going on, some might not. Here's the deal, the car idle's fine, runs great when you're not getting on it. When you get on it, and it hits about 5 psi. it cuts out, but not like a misfire. It won't let you do anything w/ the gas, IT IS STILL RUNNING, you have power steering and all, when you hit the gas it won't go or buck or anything else, but you can hear the bov close and release boost when you let off, meaning it's still letting gas in and igniting it. Here's my theory, he's already replaced the Crank sensor, I believe that it (for a so-far unknown reason) hands timing back to the module and thus has a max timing available for 400 RPM's. This same thing happened when my module went out. It would idle extremely low, but wouldn't let you hit the gas. The TGP you can downshift and everything, but it won't let you accelerate. If you push the clutch in for a few seconds it will die. Then you wait about 5 seconds and push the clutch in and restart. Any hints, he is gonna replace the Ign. module tomorrow night, I think that will work, but if it doesn't, anyone have a clue?

I would also concider the injectors. I these engines GM used a multec injecto which is know for shorting, which would cause the injector to stay open.

What kind of air intake does he have?

Its kinda hard to trouble shoot since the stalling when you push the clutch in could be  a chip problem.

So when you get to a certain point in boost, it slows down, or just won't let you go any faster? Does it maintain the boost level at 5 psi, or loose it? Does it go again if you let out of the gas and get back into it until you hit 5 psi again?

Well, it's all fixed now.  The map sensor was making it cut out, the day before I bought it he put in a different computer and a ICM.  W/ the new computer and bad map it couldn't learn an idle.  I put a new map in, but that didn't fix it, so I pulled the injectors out of my project 3800S2 Turbo (22# for stock L36) and viola!   That fixed it.  I am now fabbing up some aluminum rail mounts for me and others that want to use the shorter Accel perf. injectors or other better GM injectors.  Every time I fix this car something else breaks on it.  I got it running, and the first day I take it out the PS pump starts leaking.  Then I go to drive it to get the pump to leak (It wouldn't do it cold) and my clutch pedal stayed on the floor after a 1-2 shift.  (The clutch M/C fell off the firewall.)  I re-installed it and took it to a buddy to check out the front end and one of the cradle bolts had about 3 threads threaded in.  So now all is better, I took it out yesterday and the CLUTCH STARTED SLIPPING!!!!  I just can't win, I'm hoping it was just getting hot or something, because the PO had the tranny rebuilt and this kevlar clutch put in about 8000 miles ago.  So it shouldn't be messed up unless he didn't break it in right.  We shall see.  Thanks for your help guys.
