OK guys... a friend of mine on Clubgp (Gearhead43 for those that post there), gave us this info to help us find a number on how many TGPs were made. Now all he needs is a VIN # for an STE to see how it differs from the TGP to help out the count... anyone want to help us out? Here's the information, it's pretty interesting.
Well guys, alot of you have been wondering about the RPO code for the 1989-1990 TGP exterior package.. I think I might have run into something here.
Well we all know that the 1991-1993 and 1994-1995 Factory Aero-ground effects package is called "B4U"
NOT the TGP"S!!!! If you look on the TGP SPID label, you WILL NOT find "B4U" listed. But instead you will find B4M. The B4U first came out in 1991. The RPO "B4U" is called " Performance Package, Sport"
While the TGP's had a package that appears similar to the B4U. The designation was different. On TGP's I think the RPO is called" B4M" - "Vehicle Custom Feature Package" Because that is what the parts book says the RPO is specific for the TGP parts. It would include the Ground effects and the Hood Louvers.
I have a GM PARTS SOURCE BOOK for the 88-92 GP line. I have been looking for the RPO for the TGP Louvers for a long time. But tonight I was researching a part for a fellow 89 GP SE owner when I noticed the B4M callouts on the TGP front end collision illlustrations..
That wasn't all ...
It listed TGP components as as "1989-1990 W37 Bumper/Front (TURBO) (Y92,Z7M)
The RPO's list:
Y92 - Special Edition Option "SE" (used with Custom Feature Package B4M)
Z7M - Pontiac Grand Prix "SE" (Merchandising Option (2WM37 + Z7M = 2WP37))
All TGP's started out life as "SE"'s before being shipped off to ASC to be custom fitted with the B4M and HUD's
And while I have it in front of me the TGP's "Chin Spoiler" that alot of you TGP guys either get banged up or lose is GM PART # 12504746
my parts catalog lists the lower valance as part #12504747 (red) and part #12397895 (black). I think the part # you listed (12504746) is the front bumper wrap (fascia) for 1990 which has a foot note that it would be painted to match. The 89 part # for the bumper wrap is listed as part# 12397812 (red) or part # 12397891 (black). those catalog are downright confusing if you dont have the illustration index pages with them. I believe the rest of what you said is correct about the B4's and so on.
if you want a vin# off an ste go to the thread in this forum about "bought my first ste off ebay but where is it?", in the author's first post click on the link for pictures, and scroll down to the vin#.
correct me if i am wrong but isn't the 91-93 the exact ground affects as the turbo models except for the headlights?

and the front valence, the TGP one comes to more of a point than the GTP's......I'll post pictures of a 91 GT(to compare the kit) when I get home(at school at the moment)
yeah but basically if you look from the front clip back you can't tell

true.....I'll get those pics up in a little while...fixing to head off to pay some bills(fun, fun!) at the moment and I'll upload some pics of my fathers "new" TGP(bought from "RickYoung" on the board, it's super nice and has a few mods to boot 8)

Yeah, I'd be interested to see this comparison.

these are 91-93 GTP and its exactly the same except for the quad lights, the red one even has a gold emblem like the TGP and the gold lace wheels
some of them have a flatter front valence......I'm at school again and didn't get a chance to post pics of the GT yesterday, I will tomorrow w/ close-ups of the front valence
ok, here are a few pics(the red TGP does not belong to me, I saved it from a post on the w-body board in which redturbo90 posted/hosted pics for the seller)...the black GT pics were taken by me as was the black TGP pic. I'm confused now...I'm not exactly sure if the GT/GTP front valence comes to less of a point or not, you be the judge  (maybe the fog lights are throwing me off?)
GT front end
Red TGP front end
Black TGP front(car was a tad dirty at the time..had to make the pic super bright to see the valence)
Black GT side shot(from the side, GT's/GTP seem to have less of a front valence showing unlike the pics 1truecavalier posted? maybe the GT has a slightly different front...I also believe there is another form of B4U floating around judging by the way a picture of a Blue 91 looked on autotrader a while back..it appeared to have less "ribs" in the moldings vs. the TGP and usual 91-93 moldings w/ 5 ribs....plus it had the 3.1MPFI and 91 wheels(the ugly ones...yeah, that's vague, I'll find a pic..lol) so they didn't mistake it w/ the 94-96 B4U w/ less ribs/indentations)
****Black GT side pic is no longer working..accidentally deleted it off my hosting site...will edit this again to put it up...or if anyone wants a few pics of a GT, let me know and I'll email em' to ya. :D
Matt,
I see what you mean, and its not designed that way. The TGP's don't have the proper support for the front valance, so they bow a little making them LOOK rounder, than the properly installed GTP/GT one.
I didn't feel like cutting and pasting, but you can see an example of this on my webpage. The older pics aren't great, but the valance is properly installed and supported in the MY TGP Gallery, where as the Resto Gallery its not so it looks rounder.
The valance is the exact same part number. However, the original TGP valance was 2 pieces, the new one is one piece which may have something to do with it, but very few TGP's have the original valance.
Also, the TGP's weren't B4U cars, the were simply turbo cars. The ground effects were carried over to production GP's as the B4U package. Since the parts directly interchange except for the front bumper cover, its easiest to refer to them as the same.

it appears that the TGP my dad bought has extra support being that the valence looks almost 100% like the GT one I took a pic of, I believe there's a mounting support kit available from GM, I probably read it on your site or something a while back?
http://aldridgec.home.att.net/TGP/exterior/valance.htm
probably here.
I think I may remember talking with rick about this. But my brain sucks for name association.
Hey, in reference to the second black TGP there, where did the McClaren decal come from on the honeycomb piece on the bumper? I've never seen that might be cool to get ahold of one.
I have one of those decals. But it's a secret where it came from. :drinking:

it came from Jeff Middaugh(the chip and x-over guy) when the previous owner ordered his chip, PM "idbeast" on here and he should be able to give you Jeff's contact info or get you one 8)
