Title: belt screaming
Post by: blcclark on August 01, 2003, 02:35:04 PM
I need help. My belt on my 89 tgp was screaming and then the battery died, so I figured it was the altenator. I bought a new altenator, put it in and it ran fine in idle. When I drove off the belt started screaming, so I pulled over after a min. and the car died. Battery was dead again. So I turned everything off to charge the battery and when I got it started, it ran fine, no screaming at all. Come to find out when everything is off the car runs good, but when i turn on the a/c the belt screams and it drains the battery. Ive never heard of this and I cant figure out the prob. Please help.

Sounds like a bad alt. Even though you got a new one, it could still be bad. Also, the idler pulley could be bad, and the belt not tensioned enough. This would cause the same prob, as the more current the alternator has to put out the harder it is to turn.

what about the belt?  pep boys burned up 3 $200 altenators in my hyndai, claimed i had an electrical problem etc... but never changed the belt :(   Altenators usually don't squeal.  You will hear a grinding type noise if they are messed up inside.  Check this also.  Was the battery totally dead?  If  so  you can damage the altenator this way to.  Things that go bad on a TGP as far as electrical system and charging are Altenator, belt, tensiometer, and ( --> cables <).  You need to get a knife and cut a slit in your cables like half way down it to see if its copper looking or corroded.  Check the entire grounds at the connections by the tranny, front support and going to the battery.

What about the A/C compressor?  If it's going out on you it could be creating so much drag that the belt is screaming and the alternator isn't able to spin fast enough to charge your battery.  Or, as 1trucavalier stated, it could be your belt.  It might be stretched so much that the tensioner isn't able to keep the proper tension.  Good luck

Well, if he does that it's going to corrode soon afterward.

not if you put some goob or silicone on it.  Its kind of self explanatory, if you cut it of course you need to seal it.  But the whole point is after 14/15 89-90 yrs those cables are usually toast.

Well it turns out I was riding on the interstate and the belt broke off and drained the batt. So i had to park it off on the side of the road because i was on my way tro work. I got a new belt ant it ate it up in less than 60 sec of idling. Towed it to the shop and it turns out i needed a new crank-shaft pulley and a new belt again. Thanx for all the help though.

If you have to get a new crank pulley you should thing about getting the underdrive pulley from FFP.  It's lighter and will give you a couple of extra horses! :D   Here is the link if you are interested.

Is your a/c compressor locked up?

No its not locked up, but b4 the pulley went totally out the a/c made it run even worse. Since i got the new pulley on its running fine again.

Well I am sure you have already tried this and if you havent then it may not work either, but two of my buddies recently had belts that were making a lot of really annoying and embarassing noises. They were both really easy fixes, one of the guys's belts was just loose, and all we had to do was tighten it down. For the other guy, who bought this stuff called "Belt Ease" with the car off we sprayed it on the belts and then with the car at idle we sprayed it on, the annoying noises stopped. I just thought it was something you could try!
