Ok, I'm starting to think these things eat more tannies than my Supra eats head gaskets!! Teh car was running funny, and we tracked it down to a bad cat. Punched the cat out and vioala!!! POWER!! Obviously a little to much though.... The F*in Tranny blew on the interstate!!!! I think it's time to find a different trans shop and some aftermarket goodies. When I'm done, that sob will take 1000hp without even blinking! Yet another reason why I hate domestic auto transmissions....
Go for the 5-speed swap and you don't have to worry about the POS 4T60 trannies! Plus you will feel even more power with less rotating weight... 8)
I would, but sourcing a 5-speed for the gp here is nearly impossible. Plus, the car is supposed to be a daily driver, and a 5-speed in city traffic is a pain. Otherwise I would drive my Laser or the Supra. I'm just patiently awaiting the release of Jeff's trans kit... hehe

Haven't seen him on here lately. Must be hard at work I am sure... 8)
MAXIMAGE,
Your in SPARTA WI.......how many stoplights does that town have now 3?? J/K there was only 1 when I lived there.
We have 2 now!! Lol
Oh, get this.. we have a walmart SUPERCENTER opening in a few weeks! I would say it would be good for the guys on Ft McCoy, but there is one on the highway by tomah 5 miles from the base!
Back in my day people got their milk from Hermans Dairy, and there was maybe 2 places to eat. (besides the bowling alley)
Peace...

Not scarce just people being cheap. I had a swap kit and I had to wait 1 1/2 years to get a buyer. I saw another in a yard but passed it up because it wasn't worth the trouble to pull it. I don't look for them anymore since no one seems to want to pay more than $200 for a kit.

What blew?
I know that those 4t40s blow from the overdrive ,,but does anything else go even if you leave it in drive....IE...differential, bands, inputshaft, ect..I am thinking that I should stick with the 3t40 if nothings out there for the 4t60.
I've seen high friction bands, some costom stalled converters for my trans and some other performance goodies.
All I've seen between my trans and the 4t60 is that the 4t60 holds more engine torque but mine holds more gearbox torque....
here what I've found....
Weight lbs. Engine Tq Gearbox Tq Gross Veh. Wt.
TH-125c (3t40) 161 200 416 5100
TH-440-t4 (4t60) 195 235 369 5181
4T60-E 203 280 390 6400
4T65-E 214 285 400 6400
4T80-E 295 305 461 6800
Also the Torque converters are all the same diameter (9.64)but except some 4t65-E's some had 10.16. the 4t80-E has 10.43. Good luck trying to shoehorn the 4t80 in the TGP..and finding someting to controll the other E trannies.
The wierd part about it is, I had no warning at all. I was going fine, stopped, and couldnt take off. No forward, no reverse, nothing. It was like it ran out of fluid, but was completely full. I think the internal pump may have blown.
No, it sounds like your OD clutchs burned and siezed themselfs together...
:drinking: :drinking: :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:
Just by chance.....did you check the cv shaft? I had basically the same problem with my TSTE. I was waiting to get the money together for a tranny kit when I decided to check everything out. The cv boots looked good, but the splines were stripped on the inner joint.
I agree with jim, especially since you were on the highway. There is a lot of heat in the OD especially if the power is up on your car. Just that little bit extra will push the OD clutch to the edge and seize it up. Basically the car is in OD and 1st gear at the same time, so you have a trans brake that won't let go!
Chris
SO what I gathered ...OD is not from the Tq converter,,its in the trans...or am I wrong. If its in the trans...could the bands be upgraded to something better. "they seized up"...is there not enoug oil supply or pressure or not enough surface area or friction metiral?
Come on trans rebuilders...shed some light on this matter.
