Hello all,
I am a member of what used to be EFI-Street, now its merged with GM forums. I own a 1995 GTP. I have an opportunity to buy a 90 TGP for $500. It will need some work, brakes, tune up, coils, door handle, major cleaning, tires and I'm sure a few more things.
What else should I look for? The engine started right up and the turbo unit didnt have any funny sounds, it has been sitting for a while.
Its red, not my favorite color, the GTP is black. It has tan leather and its not torn either. Bad thing is it has 154K miles. Does the turbo need a rebuild at a certian cycle?
I have so many Q's but I'm still going to get it when the owner finally gets the title. See this guy sold it to his 16yr old son and he didnt want it. His loss my gain right...

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you're on to a decent buy. I wish I could help you out on what to look for but since I've only had my TGP for a short while I'm still learning and probably not the best person to tell you what to look for. I do remember reading something on here about the turbo's needing rebuilt about every 50k or so, can anyone confirm or correct me on this? Good luck with the car and welcome again.

I don't think that's true. Mine has 180,000+ on it and it's just starting to get a little play in the shaft. Very little but it's starting.
Pull the air intake hose off of the turbo. Grab the end of the shaft and move it in and out, up and down, side to side... See how much play it has, if any.
I cant get to it yet, Its not mine yet. I dont want this guy to change his mind on me. I'm acting like its no big deal and just another $500 beater that needs work. What he dont know can and will hurt him.
Hopefully in a week or two its mine for good. I want to get to it before it turns ass numbing cold here.

Welcome!!
For $500 you really can't go wrong if it runs and the tranny doesn't slip! You will want to ensure the tranny does not seem to have any major issues as this is a $1200 - $2000 repair at times. There are many things with the car that could be wrong so if you get a chance...DRIVE IT...for your own sanity... 8)
Welcome to the group :drinking: :drinking: :bag:
I have 3 of my 5 TGP's with over 150K and all have the original turbo's. 1 of my turbos got replaced at 187K because of a little shaft play, but it was still running 14.95's :shocked!: :drinking: :headbang:
idbeast, What ya doing with all those TGP's hoarding them? :D

Waiting for Gas prices to go back down so I can afford to drive them!!!!!!!!!!!! but I still have 3 gal of 101 octane for Blackie, for when she needs to show who is Boss :headbang: :headbang: :shocked!: :shocked!: :moon:  :agrue: :drinking: :drinking: :silly: :hockey:
But I have the dodge shadow with the boost cranked to 12-13 lbs the keep me a little intertained!!! (27-30MPG)
That is one thing I enjoyed about my 1987 Sunbird Turbo Convertible...18-20MPG around town when it was time to show guys like Aaron up in their wanna be fast cars. Then it would get 33-35 MPG cruising on the highway at 75MPH. That little 2.0 would take 12LBS of boost all day long without a hint of knock!!
I have no knock but I hit fuel cut at 14lb  I crossed some vac lines and it would not run at low RPM's but was running over 20lbs at WOT without missing a lick... darn fun 1 mile run
