Title: could it be the turbo?
Post by: Mr. Mod Man on August 20, 2003, 04:12:44 PM
I was wondering if it could be my turbo causing my car to blow smoke out the exhaust. Because it has 150,000 miles on it and it only smokes when I take exits off the freeway to the right and when it sits at an idle for more than 30 seconds.
Some diesel mechanic told me my turbo is gone and it is blowing oil in to the combustion chambers.
Is this possible? Because it does not smoke all the time, just once in a while when I veer off to the right(and at idle).
If it is the oil seals can it be rebuilt ? What should I do?

Darn Newbie?s...
This question gets asked at least every other week, if you do a search on oil smoke, or turbo smoking you will find out that about 95% of the time it is a bad Oil Return Line, the hose separates internally. I have posted many times how to fix it, and even made bets with disbelievers that it would fix the problem. (I've not lost a bet yet)
If you can't find it, email me jim@turbograndprix.com and I'll make sure you get the instructions.    :shocked!:

True..it can be a return line. First...take your upper intake pipe off and see if you have oil in it. For me, the oil was leaking onto my coolant reserve tank, so I didn't have to take the pipe off to check   Next, remove the coolant return line and see if you can see through it. I took mine off, and it was a straight shot through it   (at 95k, that's pretty good). So I put the damn thing back on and rebuilt the turbo. I haven't had any oil in my intake since then...other than the oil that's still stuck in the intercooler.

The only problem with sighting the hose is that when its straight or cool enough to touch it won't be blocked. But since its bent a little on the car, and gets hot the bad spots can block it then.

When I checked mine, it wasn't exactly cool... ...but I wouldn't recommend anyone else doing that. Also, the reason I can say for sure that it wasn't the line, is that I haven't had any problems after the turbo rebuild..aside from a very little amount of oil that's still in the intercooler. And since I drive it maybe 3 miles a month, it's taking a while to work out of there. If I would've been ambitious enough to flush the intercooler out, I probably wouldn't have any oil problems at all.  :D

my oil return line was 3/4 blocked and my crossover was fried with just 60,000 miles on my tgp and it spent it's entire life in texas before I bought it this year.  The oil return line is like the crossover in that it almost always needs addressing on these cars.  I couldn't tell that the line was getting blocked but I bought a new one and cut the old one in half and the inside was collapsed almost all the way around, just like Jeff M. told me it would be, same thing with the crossover. THanks Jeff.

thanks for the help. It must be the turbo because I already did the oil return line.
I will replace it after my wallet heals from having to buy a brake pump (powermaster III   $770 prior reman. including shipping) .
