I need the inner and outer diameters of the stock exhaust pipe directly behind the cat convertor.
Hopefully this weekend I can get around to gutting the stock cat. My plan is to unbolt the exhaust from the downpipe (will I need a new gasket to go between the 2?), cut the pipe right behind the cat, gut the innards, bolt the pipe back up, and hopefully find some sort of adapter or clamp to rejoin the 2 pieces of cut pipe. The pipe will be welded back when I can find someone to do it for me. Would I be able to find an adapter that would work for what I'm doing?

I made the cut before the cat. The downpipe will easy move downward without removing it. Then undo the rubber donuts just after the cat area. I used a drill bit with extension to drill holes in the material then used a long metal rod to bust it up. Keep in mind that you should use a respirator and make sure you get as much out as possible since any chunks will be forced downstream and clog. I used a shop vac to suck everything out when done. Then get a coupler (like a butt connector for the cut area and clamp.
anyone know the ID of the downpipe?
Just did the 2 1/2 exhaust and have pieces of the old stuff laying aroung. The down pipe and cat to y pipe are 2 1/4 od x .06 wall. The y is 1 3/4x.06 wall. I didn't replace my gasket and it doesn't leak. Couldn't find a gasket at the parts stores they were all to small. I guess it's a dealer only item. :(

So what kind of adapter should I look for? Something with 2 1/4" inner diameter?
I was looking at the 4" exhaust adapters tonight at Advance, and I think I confused myself on what I need to find. :? Would a smaller diameter pipe adapter to fit inside the stock pipe on the car (and then 2 clamps) work? Or should I go with an adapter larger than the stock pipe, and then clamp it over the pipe?

J C Whitney has the clamp you want. Stainless steel band clamp. Get the clamp before you cut the pipe so you can stay far enough away frim the bends for the clamp to work.

I believe it's a Walker Exhaust product and most any store could order it for you. I am sure shipping is 15 or better.

The car seems to have a bit more pickup with the cat gutted, so I'm happy with the overall result.
Took me about an hour and a half to do. What took the longest was getting the downpipe bolts off. Cutting the pipe and pounding out the innards of the cat went quick, and bolting it back up was a breeze.
What surprised me, was that the honeycomb material inside looked to be in good shape yet. Also, there wasn't much of that stuff in there at all. I'd say it was about an inch and a half think right at the back of the cat.
