So, here I am with just having my Top Gun 160 chip in for the 2nd day. I'm coming up on a stoplight on Rt 248 near Rt 33 and I pull up next to a 3rd Gen F-body...a black firebird formula with the black crosslace wheels. He gives me a look as I sip my med coke from BurgerKing. I look back with the straw in my mouth and he looks away and gives it a little gas. Now, he's piqued my attention...I return the favor and give it a little rev. He looks back at me and then at my car, giving it a quick once over to asses the situation. Just as he looks back the light goes green and he gives the tires a chirp. I kinda just gave a 1/4 throttle start and wait for him to go. He gets on and I do the same. As soon as I floor it I jumped even with him and let off. He gets on it really hard this time and I do the same and I pull ahead of him as he chirps it into second and then I pull even further ahead. I think at the point where I got about 3 car lengths on him he gave up. Then I just kinda coasted down to regular speed and I see him gaining on me and fast. He comes up right behind me and I can barely see his headlights so I floor it to compensate for the lack of braking distance between our cars. I pulled about 4 car lengths this time and let off. He comes barreling up and passes me. We meet up at the next light and I'm behind him because the road merges into one lane. So, we're sitting at the light and he revs it really high so the stand on the brakes and spool it up real high for him. The light turns green and he takes off and I turn right :)
I believe that it was 5.0 because if I think I saw it somewhere that the 5.7 formula firebirds only came in auto, and this kid's car was definitely stick. I read that the 5.0 TPI are only 185 hp...is this true?? If it is then that's why I walked all over him.
I just wanted to share this story and to say that Jeff M's Top Gun 160 chip kicks some serious butt, and that I can't wait to see some 1/4 mile times with it :D
ohhh man i want a tgp so freakin bad!!!!
Don't worry crazychuck. Good things come to those who wait. Didn't your grandmother ever tell you that? lol I learned about these cars about 4 years ago. As soon as I saw a pic of it I wanted one. I had an 89 GP with the 2.8 5-speed at the time. My ex ended up getting it repoed.(long story) But anyways this woman I'm with now wanted to get a new car last year at tax time. I knew a kid by my work had a TGP and the day she told me she was gonna get a car I seen a for sale sign in the TGP. Went home the next morning and told her I found the perfect car for her.(actually for me but we won't tell her that.) She fell in love with it before she even got out of my car to look at it. Ends up I went to school with the guy and I talked him down from $3200 to $2500. She bought it that week. The rest is history. The funny part about all this is she talks about the car and how "bad" it is more than me. Sorry for rambling on and chuck...GO GET THAT DAMN TGP!!!!
lol.....man i doing what i can to get it...:)
I have a 91 TA with the 5.0 TPI auto and it's pretty even with my STE. Although it does have more go from the start, and the STE pulls harder through the revs. Can't wait to get the top gun chip.
Depending on the year the hp varies on the formulas. In 91-92 the 305's with a 5spd put out 230hp. I can tell you right now, if that guy had the crosslace wheels on that formula he has no concept of what that car is. I have a '92 Formula 305 Auto and my TGP couldn't touch it on its best day. My TGP is stock though. I hope to get a Top Gun chip soon!
Got any pics of your 92 bird? :)
Maybe the kid was a bad driver, or maybe he was just fucking with me. He did look plenty pissed off when I let off and he passed me :)
Here it is, post some of your Trans Am if you have any.

It is possible that it was the Low Output 305. Thats what my car had in it originally before I did a TPI swap. If that is the case you definatly would have beaten him...very badly. When my Formula was stock, my 3.1 Camaro with 5 spd could beat it.
Hey that's a nice looking formula. :D
Here's some of my TA. There's more on my site if you want http://www.geocities.com/no1kicker

Not all Formula's came with TPI's between 87-90. Believe it or not, some 87 Formula's came with 5.0 TBI's. Yes, TBI's.
Damn, thats one clean Trans Am! Looks good! I love the black 'birds.
90TGP, my formula was one of the TBI cars! I did a TPI swap last July.
Here's more pics of the Formula if anyone wants to see.

Very nice T/A no1kicker. I remember see that car advertised back in 2000 I think. Im up in the Worcester, Mass area. I have 3 1989 Firebirds. Check out www.zalimas.com to see the cars. It would probably be of interest to you. Pass it on. Maybe Ill see you in the area this spring for some shows. Take care, STEVE Z
Wow. Love your white 89 with steering wheel controls, headrest speakers, 91 TA taillights, 91 nose, and even a DIC! I definately would like to check out the car sometime.
I bought the car in April 2000 from the place across the street from winthrop street motors in taunton I think. I went to winthrop street to check out a 91 TA conv but it was sold when I got there. Turns out the place across the street had a 91 formula 350 and other camaros. I gave my name and # and received a message 2 weeks later about my car. Drove it and bought it. :D
Thanks for the compliment. Theres some more that I want to get done with the white 89 Formula before its done. What color was the conv that you went to see?
Dark green/tan leather. very nice car.
That T/A looks very nice. I love those black crosslace wheels.
I wonder if anyone has put black crosslaces on a TGP?
I put the silver 5-stars from the newer GP's on my TGP a couple years back. They look pretty good, but the only thing is the gold on the emblem. But that will change when I save the money to paint it. 8)
Aftermarkets are sooo expensive.
I like the way the Trans Am deep dish crosslace wheels look on the TGP. Just like the prototype. As for the black crosslace, would probably be quite striking on a black TGP.
Nice looking 'birds you got there slz.
