Title: Throttle body cleaning
Post by: RareGMFan on October 24, 2003, 11:18:05 AM
Ok, I was looking at the throttle body cleaner I normally use (the kind where you leave the engine running), and it specifically says to NOT use on turbos and diesels.  :?   But how come?  If it's sprayed through the throttle body, it's going to be burned off long before it hits the turbo.  And if it's not a good idea to use this, then what do you use for this purpose?

hey man i used purple power and shut my engine down.........it seemed to run fine for me after that ( my friend used it in his 3.4 lumina and it runs great!)     but if ya are still scared to try it  you can take off the TB and clean it out real good  heck ya might as well polish it up if its out.....i did that too and i havent noticed a dif cause i had my whole engine rebuilt and havent tromped on it yet but it looks cool to see the mirror finish on the inside. anyone with a dremel tool can do it ....if ya wanna know how i did it let me know and i can get ya a write up on it :D

1. remove TB from car               duh

2.use coarse(brown) polishing wheel (looks like a piece of coral) at appr. 10k rpm clean entire throat of TB

3. move onto fine(grey) polishing wheel appr. 15k rpm clean-up entire throat of TB

4. use 300grit wet sand paper to sand the entire throat of TB( this takes a while)

5. now use 400grit wet sand paper to go over the throat again, this takes a long time but is the most important part for a perfectly mirrored finish

6.at this point you have to decide wether or not you want to use the steel bristle brush to clean up, if so then use appr. 20k rpm to clean everything up

7. after the steel brush, (or instead of) wipe it all down with a soft rag to get rid of any filings shavings or dirt that might be present.

8. now comes the fun part, i use mothers mag and aluminum polish, you could use any polish that ya want, rub it onto the felt polishing wheel then rub that unto the TB throat till entire throat is covered in polish.

9. once ya get it all coated turn on the dremel tool to about 10k rpm and slowly polish TB throat once the entire throat is colored black from polish you can turn up the speed on your dremel tool( i ran about 25k) and polish till it is clean.

10. you can go over it again if ya want or not,  that is up to you

11. wipe down again with soft rag to clean out any left over polish

12. reinstall TB to car

13. YER DONE!         congrats! :D  :D  :D

i cleaned out the TB with purple power between each step but that is up to you
