Next summer I'm looking to run 13's in the 1/4 mile. I ran a best of a 14.6 @ 95 with my only performance mods being a TopGun 160 chip, K&N, and a wrapped intercooler to throttle body pipe. Right now, I'm doing a getrag 284 swap and I'm hoping that I can lose 2/10s from the tranny being more efficient(manual vs. auto) and better gearing(3.67 vs 3.33 & more gears). I'm also contemplating a full exhaust(2.5" at least), if not at the least remove the cat and get dynomax bullet mufflers. I'm also thinking of making a homemade CO2 sprayer using some copper tubing and a nitrous solenoid as well as doing the A/C fin removal. I'm also thinking about a 3X00 topend swap as a possible fallback if I can't get there. Anyways, is there any other simple mods/tweaks I can do that might get me there?? :)
my best time was 14.6 with only cat removed, topgun160 and k&n cone on turbo
this year i have all that plus a custom high lift cam all new rings gaskets and the vacuum accumulators in my tranny shimmed to 1/2 an inch plus a new xover and soon ill have athe 62 mm tb and my upper intake hose wrapped and i already took out my ac fins man did that make a dif! anyway we are thinkin that i should be around 13.8 or so.................
Yeah, I'm thinking that I can get close with just the 5 speed, CO2 sprayer, A/C fin removal, and exhaust. If I don't make it then I'm doing a 3100 topend swap along with a cam. I shouldn't make it then as long as I have I it tuned decent. 8)
Where's newport at in PA?? Maybe we can meet up at Maple Grove or someplace and both run 13s. :D
dude i would love to meet up and run 13's together! can you imagine the looks we would get? newport is up 322 from harrisburg about 45 minutes beaver springs is the closet drag strip to my house where is lehigh valley ? down by maple grove i take it? cause i have been there and could come down to drag with ya next year( have not been there to race...i went to watch NHRA like 3yrs ago) if we decide to do that my friend will prob bring his tricked out euro 3.4 lumina or maybe his 95 GTP ( that is a nice car!!) he has a page on cardomain....actually both his cars are on there but that remains to be decided first off let me know where you are at excatly and we can go from there............
here are kevins cars.........GTP....ok i lied this car is on starfire....http://photo.starblvd.net/REDLINE95/1-1-4-1048096773?m=0&pg=0&ro=0&co=3
lumina..............http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/255075/1
check out his race page on the lumina site........
I'm actually from Nazareth, which is in the Lehigh Valley. I've never actually been to Maple Grove. I usually go to Island Dragway in NJ to race.
i know where nazareth is ............ been there on work , not a bad drive might even be willin to come down just to visit ya and your car .....inthe spring of course
another thing that will cut quarter times is the ffp underdrive pulley and the ffp solid mount dogbones. Port and polished heads with bigger valves lift cam with bigger diration. I'm doing a complete motor build up with a new turbo and all that I plan on running high 12's with the automatic trans!!

That's good anyways as I don't have either of my TGPs on the road right now. :D
shugtxturbo............i am puttin in the high lift cam.... .394 instead of the factory .250 i believe it is we are not messin with the duration because of the turbo we dont want to make it detonate im also gettin the pulley and dogbones in the spring ...before racing season starts my turbo is due in in about 2-3 days.....JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS!!!!!! as soon as that comes in my TGP will be back on the rd for the first time in 5 months! main reason for it was that i spun a bearin on cylinder number 4 so while we had it apart we decided to do a rebuild....cam crank rings stuff like that and at the same time im swappin in the T28 turbo ( not a ball bearing though :? ) but with all my mods and the auto we are sayin it should def. be in the high to mid 13's and after my 62mm TB maybe even lower
not bad for a car that i got for 1650$ and have so far put that much in parts and labor bringin my grand total to around 3400$
13 seconds for 3400$...........my friend has over 5 grand in his lumina 3.4 and might hit HIGH 14's on a good day
I'm not sure exactly how much faster you'd go with a manual. It does soak up less power but it can't build boost at the line. Plus you loose boost inbetween shifts and you have to wait for it to spool again. A blow off valve can help this but its not a complete cure. An automatic also never misses a shift. If you where building an autocross car a manual would be a good chocie but on the drag strip you cant beat an auto.
Yeah, I know that I'll never be able to build boost on the line like I would with the auto. And I already have a BOV on the car so that should help some. On average getrag 284 equipped 3.4 DOHCs are usually at least a 1/2 second faster than an auto, and that's on a stock car!! Now, I know there are a lot of variables there (engine tune, miles, etc.), but I've been told numerous times how much faster the 5 speeds are autos. Besides, TGPs don't really have a lag problem if you've ever driven one, and I'm guessing you don't own one from your signature. Also, if you've ever looked into TGP code or raced a TGP you might not know that there is a "Launch Mode" that pulls out all of the timing if you make too much boost on the line. I'm only figuring on losing 2/10s in the 1/4 from the swap. 1/10th I figure from less drivetraing loss of having a 5 speed, and the other 1/10th from the different FDR(3.67 vs. 3.33). I think that figuring on losing 2/10th's sounds like a pretty good estimate to me. Of course that will be after I relearn to drive the thing. 8) :D
The 3.4's may go a second faster but thats on an N/A car, not a turbo. It makes a big difference. No I don't own a TGP but I have seen and driven one. Plus I think having a Typhoon and having experience with a lot of Turbo Gm cars gives me a little credit. Oh well thats beside the point. One thing I will agree on though is the fun factor of the car goes way up being that you get to shift your own gears.
Sorry...but the TGP with a 5-speed in it compared to an Auto tranny is a night (without moonlight! ) and day difference. I would think with a line lock you could easily build boost on the line...just wouldn't have a clutch for long. I never had any issues with boost on my car while racing it. Within a car length the boost would be pegged...with the BOV on the car it would take maybe 1 second to recover and be pegged again.
We have had the descussion on this board a few times about the pros and cons to auto trannies vs. manual. I am a firm believer that if the driver knows how to shift and finds the sweet spots in the torque curve he will shatter an auto car of the same make/model... 8)
i would love to drive a tgp with a 5 speed ...............anybody in pa or nearby states have one that we can play with for the afternoon? of course i would bring my t-28 turbo'd modded tgp auto to also play with

Soon, I'm guessing I'll be done in late January as long as Santa brings me a clutch for x-mas :P 8)
The auto is already out of the car, but I haven't had time to put he pedal/shifter in it lately as x-mas is eating-up all of my free time.
Heres what I plan on doing to my $1400 TGP. Full motor build up, bigger cam, port and polished heads with valves bored out to make them bigger (more air in more air out equals faster) I also plan on getting the Jeff M x-pipe and the top gun performence chip. Upgrading to a T04B turbo(quicker spools with about the same boost). FFP underdrive pulley and dogbones. 3" exhaust with 40 series mufflers. Chill Factory fuel pressure regulator along with their Mr. Freeze CO2 charged intercooler(guaranteed 60 degree temp drops) Limited slip differential with 3.73 gears instead of 3.33. already have a custom intake set up(dropped estimated .3 off my quarter) and wrapped intercooler to throttle body pipe along with a 62mm throttle body. Some serious cash for some serious mods for a screaming kick ass car. My goal is to set a time for someone to beat. If I can set one I want someone who can beat me and teach us how they did it. Plus come on now where else can you get a 13 year old 12 second car without dumping 10 grand into the motor. My total mod cost is going to be right around $2500 maybe a little more. So for a grand total maybe of $4500 bucks including the car I have a car that will run 12's.

<---- Is halfway to your destination already......
Ported heads, slightly oversized valves(did it for rebuild purposes), Crane 2020 cam, catless and mufflerless exhaust, K&N on the Turbo, Greddy Prfec-B boost controller(ganked from my Supra until spring)...
Waiting on a way to fix my tranny issues. I think I may have them just about solved.. Kept poping transmissions left and right(do a earch for tranny problems, and about half of them are mine I think..lol). I'm trying to stay auto, as I have enough manual cars to play with. It's also a daily driver, so I need to keep it streetable.
I'm going to install an FMIC, NOS Nozzle wet mitrous fogger if they will fit, Accell 24# injectors, custom ECM programming, Modded JeffM x-over(need to fit the T-04 or bigger... May do some real custom stuff and slap on something bigger), larger fuel pump(probably walboro), and a built bottom end(have the core engine on my stand right now).
If this doesn't get me 12.0 1/4's, and good reliability, and streetability, I"m going to drop in a built Turbo'd 3800 Series II.
How about hitting those 12 times without NOS. Thats my goal. ALL MOTOR BABY!!!!!!! I think to add to my list to I better get some stronger half shafts.
I prbably could hit it without Nitrous but I also haev a masssive sound system going in, and some 18"rims. So weight will definately play a roll in it as well Hence the addition of the Nitrous.....hehehe
awwwwwww hell, if i would have known that we were allowed to use NO2 i would be shooting for 12's too but hey all motor!!! ???????? wait ALL MOTOR????? you better look under your hood again..................oh yes.....that little silver thinggy on the right side is a TURBO.... aka. boost.....aka. not ALL MOTOR....................lol...................my friends pick on me all the time bout that but i tell em hey when you can beat me then you can laugh so far none of them have........and tomoro when my t-28 gets here im takin it to my mechanic and we are puttin it in ASAP so i can break thsi thing in then hit the track with it and spank some ass
I think more people need to venture into the gen III swap, the gen III setup w/ the largest valves(I believe 00+ for the 3100's and maybe a bit earlier on the 3400's) and then you'd have a pretty good increase in power even if your TGP was basically stock. This would definitely help in the quest for better times..I think my dad has a turbo upgrade, a bov, and a custom tune in the works..he's planned these things anyways, but he's also been talking about getting another unique car soon(possibly a GN 8) ).
I plan on a 3X00 swap, although I don't really feel like going through the trouble of finding a 3400 when 3100s are everywhere and much easier to find. I already have '94 3100 heads, and I plan on the getting the rest pretty soon. It depends if I feel like going to the yard and freezing.  :D
ok....so are you guys plannin on 12.9 or 12.0? im shootin for 13.5 or close to it .......for now............but hey i wouldnt mind breakin into the 12's soon .......even if i have to use NOS and drag tires lol.....my current time of 14.6 was on 110 gas and cheap-o tires aired down so tires will make a huge dif in the way my car launches .............oh yea and on a side note....im sure it has been mentioned before but i will ask it again ......who is the fastest TGP? and what is their time? probably a good question to ask now since we have several of us that are shooting for low times maybe we could have a goal to shoot for if someone else has already done it............ 8) .........
i think the fastest one i have heard of was like 14.2 ....................
There was a corrected time of 13.56 I think from some kid in AZ.. he's on here I think, but on the w-body board also.
wow that is fast! that is what i want to run........or faster.......
Yeah Im curious what the fastest TGP is too. Also why not just run more boost instead dealing with adding another power adder and using NO2.
you aren't gonna get much of a quality boost out of our puny turbos past 12-13psi
Get a bigger turbo.
ill be runnin a t-28 with 12 psi .................thats always more power and i might get a boost controller to help raise it a little more..........maybe to 15-16psi...........would that work?
Something else you guys might want to think about is Alcohol Injection. It most likely allow a lot of you guys to run more boost than you thought was possible with out race gas and a better turbo. GN guys have been using it for years and its a pretty proven for reducing intake temps and letting you high boost without race gas. SMC makes a really good kit that alot of Gn and Sy/Ty guys have used.
http://www.smcenterprises.com/injector_kit.htm
I hope to see some 12 second times slip from you guys this spring.
as an aside what is your fastest time? i know typhoons are fast and at 19 psi they ought to be lol.............
This year its gone 12.6@ 107 with an external wastegate, Air to Air Intercooler, Open downpipe and a chip running 18-19psi.
so ya want us to beat ya huh? and are we allowed to do things like unhook exhaust at down pipe to eliminate backpressure? and take out the spare?
I've read about that alcohol injection kit, it seems like it would definetely be worth it, even for a slightly modified car. But it's almost $400 isn't it? A little steep for me right now, but maybe in a year or two.
Quote from: m6ambaare we allowed to do things like unhook exhaust at down pipe to eliminate backpressure? and take out the spare?
Sure why not. As long as I get to bolt on a bigger turbo like your doing. Maybe spray some alky too. You know just to keep things fair. :D
ummm...............what kind of turbo came on those things stock? sure i guess you can do some of that stuff too since we are all gonna shoot for low 12's
Mitsubishi TD06-17C
if you're interested in alky injection, search for Eclipse5302 on this board and then go to the website..he has a smc enterprises kit if I'm remembering right and shows how he installed it and whatnot on his site
.ah I found the link for you guys.. http://www.turboste.com/ 8) Anyone had any luck constructing their own alky kit? I know of a easy way to get the alcohol in, but I can't really think of a good way to control it at the moment like the SMC controller allows.
You know, it's a little harder to make 1 wheel and 3.1 liters go 12's but w/ a *few* extra tires, and 1.2L worth of displacement, I think we should get a couple power adders on ya. Hell, if that's how it's gonna be, I just drop my 3800S2T in there.

I know that is far harder to make a TGP's fast. Eventhough Sy/Ty's have a small aftermarket TGP have none by comparison. Anyone who can get a TGP into the 12's deserves tons of respect. Im getting the feeling this thread has started to take a turn and is turning into some kind of a compitition and thats not what I wanted happen. No, that's not the way it was going IMO, one thing I don't want to do it push a Sy/Ty person away. Us GM Turbo people got to stick together, not too many of us. We (I at least) respect, and welcome all the tips, tricks, and ideas you've got. I was just having a little fun w/ ya, and my sister passed away 2 days ago, so I'm just trying to make the best of the holidays and keep my mind off of it.

Yeah, I completely agree with you that we need to stick together. Although, us FWD guys don't get any respect. I get many a strange looks when I tell people that I'm a GM FWD nut. Don't get me wrong as I love GNs, SyTys, and even the occasional F-body(even though their engine bays suck :D). I just feel that we are often overlooked in the performance aspectof things. Although, the L67 powered cars have helped us immensely to show people what GM FWD can do. 8)
god910, I'm sorry to hear about your sister passing away. It's a real tragedy when something happens that close to you. You have my condolences and I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you can still manage to have a Happy Holiday season. :(
Quote from: skalorI get many a strange looks when I tell people that I'm a GM FWD nut.
Probably not nearly as strange of a look as I got from the owner of an 11 second Typhoon last summer during a cruise night in Downer's Grove. I saw the thing parked in a lot because the street itself was out of spaces. Took a quick glance at it when I was walking by. Later on, when the show was pretty much over and most of the cars were gone, I got in my car and was leaving when I noticed the truck had parked in the street with its hood up. So I pulled into a space a couple spots ahead of him to get a closer look. It was white with a big country dude gaurding it while the middle aged owner was sitting on a bench near by. We talked for a good 30 minutes at least. Then I told him that the Pontiac 6000 that I came in was also AWD, and I had a TGP motor waiting to drop into it. I don't think he was familiar with either vehicle, so you could imagine the shock. He shot a look at me like "wtf are you talking about?" I don't think he believed me at first untill I started going into detail about both cars. He just kept starring at the 6000 without a word, then finally asked ..... "AWD?"
He was looking to race for some money and asked me where 75th street was. I gave him directions and we parted ways. Needless to say, I probably gave him quite a bit of information to digest. But MAN was that truck SWEET! Running over 700 hp he said!!! I can't remember the guys name, but he was some big time racer from what the body gaurd was telling me.

My condolences, as well. I know it's hard to make sense of such events, but I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, even if we don't know or understand that reason at the moment. Keep your head up, buddy. I think I speak for all of us on the TGP forum when I say if you need anything, we're here for you.
What color was that Typhoon and what kind of rims did it have?
god910, Sorry to hear about your sister. I know how it is I lost my best friend about 3 months ago. Hope your doing well.
Quote from: 6000STE/AWDIt was white with a big country dude gaurding it while the middle aged owner was sitting on a bench near by.
As for the rims, I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure they were after-market. Lot's of chromed out parts under the hood with an MSD ignition. They were making fun of a Firebird with it's hood open and no one around gaurding it because it also had an MSD ignition. The owner of the Typhoon said "all you need is one person to screw the slightest thing up on that box".
I'm also pretty sure they were not from around here. I
think they were from Michigan. They had come up for some event on the weekend if I recall correctly. You're from DeKalb? I live in Naperville.
Lots of chrome under the hood eh? I think I might know who it is. Did it look like this?

perhaps i started the whole "competition" talk and i apologize...that is not what i intended it to be at all i was just pokin fun at another GM turbo nut in good taste........i also agree that we need to stick together and that way we can all be faster better and dominate the streets and strip  im sure that all sy/ty owners can share some tricks with us and we can share with them . and yes making a TGP hit 12's is awesome so even if i am not close i congratulate anyone that can do it :P ............(as long as he tells us how to do it) :)
btw................very sweet ride LDZ.............love that hood

By George, I think that's it!! Please don't tell me that was Oakbrook where that show was held??? There was a show right under my nose, and I missed it??? I say that because it looks like the building that the Fiero Fest was held at a few months ago.
And is that a Marlboro Syclone right next to it??? I heard the owner of one lives in Downer's Grove or somewhere near there.
The white ty isn't mine. It belongs to John Gerber. I believe right now its either the 2nd or 3rd fastest AWD Typhoon in the country. Very nice truck.
Yeah thats a Malboro Sy next to it. Those pics where taken at the 2003 Great Lakes Gathering of Sy/Ty's. I believe the town it was held in was Lemont. Not too sure.
Here's a few pics of the Ty for those who want to see.

Hey, what's wrong with a little healthy competition? Competing with a Ty is a good goal for TGP owners. It gives us a basis to work towards.
Besides, if I really want to put the hurt on someone, I roll out the Supra.
So, still up for some friendly competition? I'd love to race that Ty with the TGP just to see it run. Those things are bad!!!!
Nothing wrong with some healthly competition at all. Nothing motivates people like a god race. :D I just didn't want anyone to think I was here to piss anyone off or say that my stuff was better than anyone elses.
Hey since most of us live in by chicago I'm from belvidere we should get together and show off each others cars and go to the strip at Byron of Joliet when we are done with our cars to show off what we can run.
90tgpblack is from the Chicago area, too (Schaumburg). We really should have some get together or something for the TGPs around here. There aren't many car guys to talk to in Naperville, seeing how most people around here think anything less than a BMW or Mercedes is a tin can. Of course, these are the same people who can't check their own oil, so I don't put too much stock in their opinions. :D
well tell john that i like his ride......and i like yours too plain jane sleeper (SUV) those wheels are very nice , i want a set almost like tha but i want 18's and a deeper dish than what you have....i am also goin to get them powder coated to match my originals gold color
As long as it's after winter, I'll be up for it!
I am up for a gathering of local tgp's for sure
