Title: PM3 pump not running
Post by: no1kicker on January 11, 2004, 11:03:09 PM
Lately my brakes have been working fine, new accumulator a couple months ago.  ABS light started blinking again, 2 weeks later.  Now the pump doesn't run anymore, which leaves me without power brakes.  The red brake light on the dash will come on when this happens.  Would this mean the pressure switch is good?  I'm thinking maybe the motor relay is gone?  In the past the motor wouldn't run every once in a while, but then kick in randomly.  Also my power lock relay isn't clicking today, maybe the cold weather and relays don't mix?

Yeah, Chris's site is pretty informative.  I'm thinking pressure switch, or motor relay.  Anyone have any input?

I had my relay fail... and my pump stayed on even when my engine was off.  The relay was stuck open.  Im not sure if this makes you look at the pressure switch more, but there are probably procedures you can use to isolate the problem... dont know them off the top of my head.

Well i just had this problem today and found a temperary fix... as one of the wires in my conector i guess didnt have 12v and when i would give it 12 it works fine so i just jumped it for now till i can look at it more tomarrow lol..... Well actually as im sure there is suposed to be a 12v sorce to the relay and i had none.... So i figured if i give it 12 v it will work see i had this problem before but found that i just needed to clead the contacts in side the relay witch is the most comon problem when the relay is bad...... Well i might have done this wrong way but it is working and shutting off fine so for now i guess this is a temporary fix for me than buying a new cashmasterIII... to bad the powermaster from a Grand  National wont work as i have 20 laying around here lol......

Oh ya one more thing If anyone can give me a wire chart for that area of the car so i can figure out what wires have power and how the relay works or just get me the wire diagram that would be great.....

I don't mean to steal the thread here but if my anti-lock light is FLASHING what does that mean?  Is that the accumulator???

Also, my brake light comes on when I step on the brake, but it turns right back off.  Its on for probably 1 second and thats it, but it does it every time I step on the brake.  If anyone knows what this problem is, let me know please.

Thanks,

Shawn

dbtk2 check your brake fluid level.  The ABS light will come one because the system doesn't have enough fluid to run properly and the brake light just from lack of fluid.  Mine just did this a couple of days ago.  I topped it off and all the lights went away.  Hope its just that simple for you.

There are two fuses that power the relay. There is really not a whole lot wire wise you need to know. There is a wire that gets 12 v switched from a fuse in the glove box. THis is a light guage wire. Then there is a heavy guage wire that gets 12 v from the under hood abs fuse box. Check them both, as the motor wears it will draw more current and possibly blow the power fuse.

I don't mean to sound like an ass or anything, but I'm not THAT stupid.  If I have a problem, fluids come WAY before asking people what the problem could be on a forum.  I know you were just trying to help, but I definately have enough brake fluid.

The brake light only comes on when the accumulator pump runs (which is EVERY time I step on the brake), and the anti-lock light doesn't start flashing until I hit the brakes once or twice.  (although I pulled the fuse so the light stays on now, because my DIC beeps everytime the light flashes otherwise which becomes really annoying really quickly)

Even the best of us can miss the obvious simple fixes. We can't assume how much anyone knows or has already checked.

Shawn, the motor should not be running every time you press the brake pedal. This usually indicates that the acuumulator cannot stay charged long enough from what I've read.(actually jus read about powermaster brake systems a few days ago for my brakes class @ school).  My TGP has the pump running every 2-3 brake presses and I get a very intermittent brake light from time to time(I'm betting my accumulator is bad).

hmmm....sorry i feel like i'm stealing the thread

but the tgp i'm looking at does something that worries me

i started it up today...hit the brake pedal...you can hear the motor running...then let of hit 3 more times in row and the third time i pressed really hard...the motor kicked in again but the abs light started flashing

in this case...i'll check the brake fluid...since i haven't done that yet...but if that's not it anyone have ideas...it's my first time dealing with ABS...especially PMIII

I realize it shouldn't run every time I press the brake pedal, but I'm not sure that its the accumulator that is bad.  I don't know much about this brake system, but from what I've read it could be another part that is bad that causes the same thing (can't remember what part it is).  But I figured it was probably the accumulator.  I just don't want to buy an accumulator and have that not be the problem, because as you probably already know, I am 16 and I'm not rolling in the $.

Its just really odd, because the car acts like the brakes are worn out when you press the brake (I can't lock up the tires at any speed on dry pavement with the ABS fuse pulled), but all the pads and rotors are pretty new, and they all seem to work.  (if I put my foot on the brake with the tire in the air, the tires won't spin)  It makes me think there is a bigger or different problem.

So, you think its the accumulator then??

That's the most common problem w/ it running continously from what I've read...maybe Chris A. or someone that knows more can offer us some more info..I guess I'll cycle through some old cashmaster3 posts here.   Also, I think I remember reading about a pressure switch or the like that may contribute to these problems??
Title: Same thing happened to me
Post by: TGPto_restore on March 16, 2004, 04:52:54 PM
Yup, the same thing happened to me. It cost me $1100 to fix it. Now, this was at the cities finest dealership, I had no choice I needed it fixed NOW!

But the problem was the pressure relay and the accumulator. Both were bad. These parts really have jumped way up in price.

Then, insult to injury, the radiator rusted through so I needed a new one. That was OUTRAGEOUSLY priced at the dealer, hell he told me to go to a local shop. Thank God they re-cored for like $100 or so.
