Hey ive been reading many threads here but this is my first post. I have an automatic '90 TGP. My question is when I punch it from a stop i get moving pretty quick of course, but then when it switches to second gear its like a litttle KICK. Like it could be a little smoother or something. Someone told me the previous owner tried installing a shift kit but it didnt work out right.
I dont know whether to believe him or is that how they are suppose to shift? Also any suggestions on where to let off the gas a little in an AUTO to have it switch gears for the maximum acceleration and boost?
Anyone that has an automattic if you can just post how your car shifts and if its smooth or does it kick a little.
Also, all the oils and tranny fluid are right where they are suppose to be.
You might want to check your top engine mounts (dogbones). When mine went bad it seemed as though the tranny was shifting hard when in reality it was just the engine getting bounced around at the shift. I installed the poly dogbones from FFP and it's better now.
ya I have 2 motor mounts installed right now. They seem fine. Dont know what i could tweak to make it any better. I use to have shock type mounts instead of just metal ones and it did the same thing. The main thing im worried about is the kicking hurting anything. If its just a shake and not like seriously damaging anything i dont really mind.
Check your trans mount. Thats what caused mine to shift hard. If its not that you might want to check the condition of your half shafts. As far as driving don't let off the gas and then punch it while shifting if you want the mose performece shift it by hand by going through the lower gears and winding them out to the beginning of the redline and don't let off the gas when you shift keep the petal to the metal. Taking your foot off and then punching it again confuses the tranny as to what its suppose to do and the result from that will be a really crappie shift and slower quarter times cuz you'll lose the power and have to regain it.
My tranny shifts really smooth under normal load, (under 4000 rpm) but when u put ur foot to the floor, it shifts pretty hard and really fast!
