I am seriously considering the prospect of a 5 spd. conversion in the coming months. I will be selling my truck and using the funds to get the things I need to complete the job..
Right now I have nothing. I have done some reading on the swap and know that it can be done, and I plan on doing some preventative/regular maintenance. I know that my auto is on it's way out, and I purchased RDunniii's TGP in Cali, so I have one to keep original, and one to toy with.
Would it be beneficial for me to seek out a 88-90 donor GP with the Getrag? Perhaps I should just piece together as I go along? I know that I will run into bottlenecks that way. Anyone with experience in this area have an estimate of how much I will need? About the axle-shafts also, where are you getting them? Custom? Anyone with some input is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.
im using a 1989 GP STD tranny 282 Getrag
i would reccomend finding a car a the wreckers and find the parts you need......
as for price depends on the wrecker.......i got my tranny for $250 CDN
check out this site for Swap info.......

i've just used plain '90 GP 5-speed axles. you can buy new ones at Advance or Checker or wherever and you can probably just get away with using your old automatic axles as cores.

i'd say around $500 for a good 282 tranny and everything needed, maybe a little more. besides the tranny itself, you'll need:
- 282 clutch kit
- W-body 282 intermediate shaft & bracket
- axles
- new axle seals (2)
- new tranny mount
- W-body 5-speed shifter
- W-body side/side & front/back shifter cables
- clutch slave cylinder
- clutch master cylinder
- hydraulic line between cluctch s/c & m/c
- clutch fluid reservoir & tubing to m/c
- clutch pedal
- brake pedal from a 5-speed W-body or cut the existing shorter
- clutch cruise cut-out switch
- clutch starter cut-out switch (optional really)
- custom turbo support mount for use with the 282
- custom memcal for Turbo 3.1/282 use
- 3 quarts GM Syncromesh (the 282 has a 2.1 or 2.2 quart capacity)
you will need to drill a hole for the shifter cables (http://www.turbosedan.com/shiftercablehole.JPG) , and modify the hole in the firewall to the right of the brakes booster (http://www.turbosedan.com/clutchmasterhole.JPG) into a slightly larger square hole so you can mount the clutch master cylinder. i would reccomend using a Dremel with the 18" flexshaft and a tungsten carbide cutter.
be very careful tho that bit will slice thru the firewall no problem! make small cuts and test fit the m/c often. you can see what shape the hole must be by just looking at the end of the clutch master cylinder that goes into the firewall (kinda hard to explain...). everything else is bolt on and straightforward. i have not yet installed my TSTE motor so i really can't help ya with the turbo support bracket or memcal stuff. good luck.

I did some reading on the memcal system in previous posts, I suppose it is likely that I could get a chip flashed for me, but I was thinking I may purchase the equipment and try to configure it myself. I will be looking into a donor car in the next month or so, my ex-girlfriend had an 88 GP 5spd. That thing was basic, except for cruise/air. Nice car though. Had good pull, faster than my 86 Z24. I wish I still talked with her.. that car could come in handy.
I'm working on modifing AZRC code for a 5 speed swap. I'm just changing the basics so that the car will run without the stalling issues that 5 speed people have. I'm not going to make any changes to the fuel, timing or boost tables so no worries there. If you want one let me know as I should have them done in a couple months when I start working on my car again. :D
Excellent. What fuel and and boost tables will you be using to start with? I have both of my cars equipped with TG160's.. will the performance be similar to those?
Find a donor car!! It will be the easiest thing for a first timer to do! You can look and measure and do what you need without any issues. The best part about it...all the parts are in that donor car. No running to the salvage yard...then remembering half way home that you forgot something. 1988-1990 GP with 5-speed would be my main search. I bought a 1989 donor GP for $450. Ran great, had damn near a brand new tranny in it, but just had brake issues and sold the 2.8 motor that was in the car for $450.
With the chip...do yourself a favor and get what equipment you need to do your own! It is much much more satisfying to do your own and much much less expensive! All your programming answers are here. There are a couple of guys out there that are knee deep in making performance chips for 5-speeds and could lead you in the right direction I'm sure (unless greed has taken them over as well!!  )... 8)
i'm thinking of doing the swap this summer myself also. Just a thought, but what happens with all the pressure fit hoses and such?? Like all the fuel lines are all pressure fit couplings, do they get replaced w/ some other style? Just wondering.
The only lines that are moved/disposed are the tranny cooler lines. They are of no use and go away. Nothing else changes as far as motor placement so anything that is there currently will go right back... 8)

when i first did the swap i installed a '90 Getrag 282 from a GP. that trans blew up, so right now i have an '88 GP 282 and it's doing great. for some reason the speedo was right on with the '90 trans, but with the '88 trans my speedo reads WAY to fast. you may need to mess around with the speedo function in the memcal, just a heads up. this could easily be fixed when doing a cusom memcal however.
i still need to get a cheapo laptop PC off of ebay, so i can at least check out the gmpcm.com software (i gotta mac). it would also be nice to set the laptop on the front seat so i could monitor what's going on thru the ALDL.

Hey now, watch yerself. I'd say I'm about ankle deep. I did however order the WB02 stuff, ($28 + o2 + little random shits from Radio Shack= WBo2 fer cheap) I am currently building a computer for the TGP, when that gets done, I will enter the chip neck deep.
hey god910, I never got that .bin file that I asked you for, and I was just wondering if you forgot. I wanted to make some comparisons for the sake of comparing. Also, keep us updated on different things you find and I'll do the same as we could really get the chip tuning section moving if we discuss things. What WBO2 sensor did you get, the NTK or the bosch?? I've been looking heavily into making my own WBo2 controller and I'm on the verge of ording one very soon. I'm hoping that Mick comes out with the WBo2 patch for the $8F codeset as he has already done with others($58 is one I know for sure). The patch allows you to feed the WBo2 signal through the ALDL data stream so that you only have to use one logging device to capture all your data. 8)

To bump an old thread, this Saturday I'm going to strip a '90 GP in the junk yard of it's 282 5-speed. Other than what was already listed, are there any other small parts that would be good to pick up? Also the links are dead and I thought I saw some similar pics somewhere on the web before. Does anyone have or knows a link to anything that shows the modifications made for the cables and firewall?
Shifter, shift cables, shift mount, clutch pedal lever or brake and clutch lever assembly from donor, clutch master cylinder, cylinder line and slave from tranny. Grab the 3 point dog-bone upper motor mount also. :icon_cool:
I've got my 282 bolted up to my engine right now sitting outside (car was getting painted anyway)
But i'm curious of the easiest way to get the pedal assy out of the car!?! (The whole dash is out)
I know I pulled my dash out completely...but I do not remember if it was absolutely necessary. I know it made it much easier with nothing in the way.
You might try pulling the drivers seat so you can lay more comfortably on your back to see what you need to get at.
Now I am trying to remeber if the dash had to come out to get to the mounting bolts??? or if the bolts go through the firewall for the brake/clutch mount assembly. :icon_redface: I can not remember sorry.
haha, it's OK. I'll probably figure it out. The engine's out, enterior's out, dash is out, i've got the room to work with, but i know there is going to be ONE bolt that holds me back from pulling the assembly out, that's the way it works with everything. It's always the last fucking bolt.
should be really easy with the dash out. i did mine with the dash all in place. removing the clutch pedal wasn't too hard but the brake pedal was a total PITA! i removed my front seat so i could lay on my back with my head crammed up under the dash while i removed the bolts  i couldn't actually see the bolts so i just had to go by feel. they don't go through the firewall it's more like a hinge bolt that goes through part of the dash frame IIRC.

See that's the great thing. I can't work too well laying up inside of there, cuz i'm kinda clostrophobic, and...i'm 6'6!! BAD combination, i'm huge, clastrophobic, and going into a small space upside down. I can do it..i can do it....i can do it

sorry i must have moved the pics somewhere else on my site....
that is the hole you have to modify...the one on the firewall next to the brake booster. you basically need to make the round hole into a square hole. then you can put the clutch master cylinder in and turn it to lock it into place:
http://www.turbosedan.com/cutlass/trans/clutchmasterhole.JPG
i wish i had a pic of the hole after i modified it but i don't. just take a look at the square end of the clutch master cylinder (the end that goes into the firewall) and try to copy the size/shape of it when you cut.
this is where you need to drill the hole for the shifter cables:

Much thanks. Hopefully the donor car is still there, since I'm heading up this afternoon to start stripping everything out of it with a friend. Got to love the half price days at the junk yard. :icon_mrgreen:
