How do I go about changing the front valve cover? I'll be getting my new valve cover powder coated shorlty and want to replace my nasty front valve cover with it. How do I go about removing the front cover?
I think if you remove the coolant pipe, everything else will clear. You can get to all the bolts without removing anything else.
I think moving that coolant pipe is all there is to it. I know it doesn't take long to do. I had mine off and back on in about 30 min when checking the torque on the rocker arms.
You're going to need torx bits to remove the valve covers as well, I can't remember what size they are off-hand but I think they're close to a T40 or possibly a T45, most auto stores have them as well as any other place that carries a variety of tools. You're likely going to buy Felpro blue gaskets to replace your stock/old ones, if I'm remembering right, they're made of neoprene and require no sealant. Fairly straight-forward job...by the way, use a torque wrench and the proper tightening sequence to tigthen the covers, they can bend if you tighten them too much...make sure to differentiate between in. lb. and ft. lb. :wink:
Remove coolant pipe from dip stick mount and water pump, spark plug wires optional but it makes it eaiser. (you will need a gasket for the water pump end which doesn't come with a cover gasket set.) Remove the bolt from the left dog bone (standing in front of the car) nearest the cover and swing it up out of the way. Put a rag in the dog bone/ac mount hole so when you drop the cover bolt it won't fall into that bottom less pit. :lol: Wire the dog bone so it doesn't fall on your new paint. :wink: Then the cover.
To install put a little gasket sealeant on the V where the head meets the intake manifold. Tighten the bolts with the seals on. You can't bend the cover from over tightening caus there sholder bolts and they will only go down so far. I guess you could break them though if you over tightened.:lol: Remove the sealeant that pushed out on each side of the head.

I was thinking T30 at first, but then I figured that a T30 seemed too small...good to know, and most torx sockets come in sets anyways except maybe at autoparts stores. By the way, I stated that the covers could bend because that's what I've been told before, I didn't think about the bolts not being allowed to go in but so far.
