Would the vibration decrease when the engine rpm's are raised through a downshift if the torque converter was the cause of my problems???? The vibration disappears when the tranny downshifts at speed but returns when the tranny returns to overdrive. No vibration in neutral. I have a significant leak coming from somewhere on my transmission, 8" diameter puddle (center of car) when leave for work. I have the trans 2 quarts overfull so it doesn't amount to being under fill line but it is starting to worry me. where do they usually leak from?? The vibration is occuring through the whole car at moderate to heavy boost. Feels like I'm going over railrod tracks sometimes. Power is lacking a little bit too, especially off the line. When I punch it at speed the downshift eliminates the vibration but once it goes back in to overdrive at speed the vibration returns. I replaced the#1/4 coil last weekend and it seemed to help but now the vibration has returned. I'm going to change out the middle coil this weekend and see if that will help. My boost gauge also will "flicker" +2 or +3 pounds for a split second at about 30second--1min intervals. I'm going to take off all the "soft turbo connections" between all the piping this weekend and see if I may have a pinhole or something somewhere. Any suggestions on either of these or any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Dale Malcolm. Omaha, Nebraska. Car also is missing a little bit at idle, rpms will go down a little and up a little (100) and exhaust tone changes a little bit. TIA
Signifigant tranny leak and a shake I would be looking at the torque converter. It may be loose and has wallowed out the output shaft seal. Look under the car and see it it looks like it is coming from where the tranny and the motor bolt together... 8)
I would also suspect the torque converter. I experienced a similiar problem on my suburban...a balance weight (tack welded) flew off and unbalanced the whole drive train. In your case it could be the same and vibrationg enough to damage the seal. There is a inspection cover down there to check the bolts and look for debris. Good luck
thanks guys, I will take the insp. cover off the bell housing Sun. and check to see if that is the source of my problems. Any body have any ideas on the erratic idle? I'm suspecting a lifter that I put in when I had the heads off after my overheat. Rebuilt the engine with all new internals except for pistons and crank. Overheated the third day and I removed the heads due to a combustion to coolant leak (blown head gasket) at 900 miles. I noticed a lifter that was seized and was not allowing oil to enter the pushrod and thus the rocker was not receiving any oil. I replaced he lifter with a GM unit and the thing would not prime up in a cup of oil. The guys at GM dealership said that the revolutions on the engine would prime the lifter instantly and I reassembled. Bad gas mileage and this annoying vibration ever since. 2,200 miles on rebuild now. Like I said I will check the situation relative to the replies above. Thanks, Dale.
torque converter is not the source of the vibration--hallelujah!!! Will be changing out the other 2 coils this week and see if that does it. Pan is leaking from the cheap gasket my neighbor (mechanic) put on last summer when I had him change the trans fluid. Never noticed the leak because he didn't do like I asked him and put an extra couple quarts in. Then the cam went out 2 weeks later, car was in pieces for 6 months, so I guess I just never noticed the leak until I put the extra fluid in this past month when I reassembled everything.....
