Title: TGP back on the road.. but not 100%
Post by: R Dubya on March 04, 2004, 10:13:25 PM
It sat outside this winter because of lack of garage space but I started it every week or so.  Today I licensed it and got it running (battery was low), put a charger on it and let it sit for a while, went and got some fresh gas and put it in.

It's idling real rough.  Tomorrow I'm going to pull the coils after I check for vac. leaks or boost leaks -  it's shifting REAL hard, and vibrating on acceleration.  I'm gonna have the coils tested but also pull the plugs and clean 'em off, clean the plug wire connections and give it a mild tune up.  Any tips on what else to check?

Took it off the road in Nov. and it was screamin'.  It's not was it was then.   I hope this thing doesn't shit the bed on me.  It's my only transport!   8)

I took my car off the road and it took a while to get back to normal.  I would drive it for a week and see how it responds.  My car didn't run good when I put it back on the road at first.  After about 2 weeks, it ran like it should.

Depends on how long it sat but that old gas may still be adding to the problem, that old gas may have also gummed up your injectors, some good fuel injector cleaner can help if that is the problem.  I start my stored TGPs once a month and let idle till the fans cycle a few times, keeps the battery good, and oil coating the walls to avoid rust though some prefer to spray an oil mist into the spark plug holes to do this, I also move the tranny selector into all the gears and leave it there for a while, getting some fluid to go around in the tranny etc.  Make sure no animal has eaten anything, or made a home somewhere, it happens.  Check the vacuum line/check valve at the tranny too for those hard shifts, though a poor running engine can cause some of this too.

Good luck!

Hey thanks for the input guys-  I'm about to go play around with it now.  I'm gonna start with the plugs because it seems to be burnin' a lot of fuel, and go from there.  I will update later.

Bah!  I pulled the third coil (passenger side) because when I looked at the plug it was soaked in gas.  Took it to Advance and tested it, it was putting out nothing.  Didn't even register.  I found my problem now, but I need to get some more time to pull all the plugs and change them.   I fired it up and tried to drive it but it's still vibrating badly and idling rough, so I think I will test the other two coils also.  I think I'm due for a fuel filter change too.  I need to get my injectors cleaned too.. oh well just an update.

Ok.. so I'm a little frustrated by this thing.  I pulled the coil, found it was bad, so I decided to change all 3.  My two other coils were fine, ohms were spec.  I am STILL not getting spark from the 3rd coil (pass. side), but I am from the others.  New R42LTS plugs installed yesterday.  What I know as the ignition module is the DIC module right?  I've read posts but never asked.  Is it possible for the DIC to not serve one coil?  Am I barking up the wrong tree here?  I figure that I will pull it (damn coils too) and go test it at Advance.  Anyone with info thanks in advance.  Its idling bad, I can hear it missing, and its smoking badly.  I know that the turbo needs seals replaced, at least I think, because of the smoke.  I am seeing smoke from the engine compartment also, coming from around the turbo.  Smells oily, but I don't know because of the fuel smell also.  TG 160-Jeff M crossover, the SOB was running fine in November, aside from the occasional smoke from the rear.  Not a lot of oil residue in the
turbo-->i/c pipe, so I dont think that would make such a noticeabe problem.  TIA!

A bad DIC might cause the miss, but if your gas tank was NOT topped off your gas tank will get water in it from condensation. Also the gas could have gelled up that is why I put a fuel stabulizer in my TGP's when they get parked for the winter. FWIW :drinking:

Thanks for all the info guys.  I pulled the coils again today   and took the ICM to Advance, and it failed.  So the new one is in place with all new coils and it runs great.  I had a feeling that this was the problem after new coils didn't solve it, but I assumed that once the module went, the car wouldn't run at all.  Turns out just a bad circuit serving the 3rd coil.  Oh well.  Changing those coils is not fun at all.  I found it easier to disconnect the starter's wires to get at the middle coil, just to prevent myself from throwing a ratchet.

So all is well in my TGP world.  Thanks again.
