Title: rapidfire #12
Post by: no1kicker on March 09, 2004, 11:51:01 PM
I went to autozone and they have #12 listed as optional plugs for our cars.  I took a look at one and it is the non ridged one, so I'm assuming it's the same as #8 being platinum.  Anyone know the difference betewen the 8 and 12?  And if it's safe and/or a good idea to run them?

BTW how exactly do you gap a plug?  Do you just push down with your finger until it touches the gapper?  (I feel kinda dumb for asking this)     I know the rapidfires are pregapped, but I'm probably gonna go with regular AC delco with a smaller gap.

Hey, you gotta learn somewhere.    Usually plugs come w/ around .035" or so gap.  You just take the gapping tool and move the plug around it until you reach the appropriate gap.  If you make it too big you can tap the end closed again (be careful when you do this), then try again.  IIRC the higher the number the colder the plug (Rapidfire's are backwards AREN'T they???)  But I don't know anything about the plugs so I can't tell you if they are right or not.  From what I have heard every company gets it wrong.  So I don't know if I would trust it.  If you try them, check them alot for the first couple days/weeks.  You don't want you turbo to consume half of a spark plug.

Please don't run a platinum plug in a turbo vehicle..   Platinum is designed to last a long time for old people who don't change spark plugs, not for performance engines..  Try searching the web for these 5 words "platinum spark plug turbo engine" and see what types of opinions you find if I can't convince you.

Well, I'm not going to run them if they're platinum.  I have a set of #8's but they are.  So I was just wondering if the #12's were too.  It looked like they were.  Maybe I would get lucky and find some non-plat ones at a pep boys or something.  In the end I'll probably just get the regular AC delco.
