Title: Brake Pedal problem
Post by: RedZMonte on April 07, 2004, 06:31:54 PM
Basically wants going on is my brake lights stay on all the time. i found that if i lift the brake pedal up with my foot it causes the brake lights to go off. i can feel it click up when i lift it and then when i push it again it clicks down and the lights stay on. i thought it was the brake switch. but i took the switch out to replace it and i still feel the pedal clicking and holding up when i pull on it and same when it goes down. if i remember correctly there is a rod that goes through the firewall and connects to the Master Cyl. and the back of the pedal.

does this sound like a master cylinder bad or something else? the brakes all work fine, the car stops fine its just the stupid pedal not getting pushed back up all the way and sticking the brake switch on.

ANY help would be appriceated.

You have to adjust the swtich. Common problem. Some powermasters will fail so the pedal doesn't return all the way but most likely a mis adjusted switch.

you are talking about the brake pedal switch under the dash? if so would pedal still lift up and click up with the switch out...

or possibly did it allways lift up that high and i never knew it? does everyone elses pedal pull up when you let off the brake? maybe i am just retarded. i am only going off my monte/lumina to compare with which do have a different brake system so maybe its normal and i just need to adjust the switch like you said.

Shane <--- possibly retarded

Yes the switch under the dash. There is more up play in the PMIII than vacuum booster. Its either slack in the valve allowing it to come up or the push rod retainer is not holding well. Don't pull up on the pedal. You are definitely out of adjustment if you have done that.

all fixed. i put a new brake switch in and adjusted it. then i also found another switch that i guess stops the pedal from coming upwards was pushed back too far. so i screwed it back down to where it looks like it is supposed to be and put locktite on it so it would not back out again. walla brake lights work like new.

one thing tho.. does the turn sugnal switch/multi function switch have anything to do with the brake switch? because now the turn signals don't work.... or maybe i just forgot that they didn't work becuase it sat so long. eather way it runs good and everything other then the fact it drinks gas like no tomorrow.

Thanks,
Shane
