has anyone else had any problems with the tach and speedometer mysteriously stop working?

Time for a new cluster. Unless someone knows which solder joints are the right ones and you resolder them.

I have one cluster that reads double on the speedo and tach.

Yeah, I have a cluster that reads about 25% fast on the speedo and at least that fast on the tach, probably a little more.  I know the car will shift at where 8,000 would be on it, so its pretty far off.

New clusters don't usually cost that much.  You can find them on ebay from time to time and they are usually like $35 or so.
