Title: IC heat Shield?
Post by: RedZMonte on April 21, 2004, 08:16:58 PM
If i where to make a heat shield of some sort that would go on the back of the I/C to block some of the heat from the engine bay would you guys be interested? in my mind it bolts in using the factory IC bolts.

it will angle open toward the top so that you can dump ice down between the back of the IC and the shield for race day and ice cool the IC between runs.

let me know what you guys think.

Good idea, I think though that the upper IC pipe is in need of some cooling.  It gets very hot while driving, at least on my car.

The only problem I see with doing something like that is in addition to blocking engine heat you'd also be blocking air flow.  Now if it were installed just for race day and easily removed I think that would be good.  You could just fill it up with ice before each run and have some nice cold air.  But then with that you're going to be dripping water all over the track making some people angry.

:P  to them. gives them something to do.

I guess i will have to run it and see if they bitch at me. I don't think it will block air flow, i am thinking of a wedge shape so the air will flow in like normal then be deflected upward and out the top of the shield. and help prevent heat soak on the IC at idle. i am thinking if i attach it with some badd ass 3M velcro stuff then it will come off and go on real easy.

as for the upper charge pipe, someone posted a heat shield sleeve from DEI here not to long ago. also a turbo jacket will help from heating the upper charge pipe up. OR you can get the turbo housing and the Charge pipe JET Hot Coated.

That's a good idea, I'll look into that.  The upper pipe was real hot today after driving a bit.  As for dripping water on the track, don't people ice their upper intake anyway?

I have a fix for your problem which I once had on my TGP.

I bought the DEI Air Intake Tube Cover Kit.
QuoteThe Air Tube Cover Kit is designed to prevent air tubes from becoming heat sinks. Made of heat treated fiberglass with a reflective coating, the Air Tube Cover will reflect heat away from the air tube and allow cooler air to be introduced into the intake for a denser air/fuel charge. The Air Tube Cover can be installed/removed in seconds without the use of tools by a full-length hook & loop closure system. Easy ON for GO and easy off for SHOW!  Reflects heat from air tubes/intercooler. Helps send cooler air into the intake for added power.

I have it on my upper intake pipe and it's cold after a long run. It's made from the same material that the DEI turbo insulation kit is made out of. Once it's cut to length, you'll still have a lot left over to cover anything else.

There website wants $70 for it, I bought for $50 from SummitRacing.com
