Title: Gas Mileage and Common Problems?
Post by: FieroMaster88 on April 23, 2004, 05:45:11 PM
Hey guys!

I'm wondering what type of gas mileage you get with these cars?  I'm looking into getting one, not that I'm worried too much about gas mileage, but I have a 40 mile trip to work each day.  Also, what are some of the common problems these cars have?

Thanks,

James

I have got as high as 34 mpg before on interstate and as low as 1 mpg with the pedal pushed through the floor.

Common problems...

Low fuel and check gauges lights on all the time

Powermaster III master cylinder is a junk design, rear housing cracks and leaks, $750 to replace

X-over pipe is a poor design, cracks and leaks causing driveability issues

That's all the TGP specific issues I can think of right now. There are others but they apply to most all w-bodies 88- 93, which include the crappy rear brakes. The slides in the calipers freeze up . You can get brakes from a 94+ w-body and swap them on. Very good upgrade. Not really stopping wise but reliability wise.

There are other things that I'm sure someone will post. I just can't think right now.

Doesnt sound too bad at all.  I work at a Chevrolet dealer fixing cars, so mechenical stuff and parts wont be much of a problem.  I've done brake work on older Lumina's and remember how crappy the rear calipers are, but I dont think the loaded calipers are too bad price wise.
