Title: Bullet proff tranny
Post by: TurboGTU on May 02, 2004, 04:04:45 AM
Well sorry if I have to post my non-TGP related stuff here..but it seems like you would know more than the boys at the other sites.

I am having a big problem with transmisson failure...much like you...LOL..but mines not OD related.

OK...here goes...
When I got the car ready to roll when the engine was done...I found out that the trans somehow leaked all the oil during the whole year it was parked...so we filled it with almost 8 qts of oil...
OK got the car running but only 1st and 3rd worked...the trans would look for 2nd(nutrall between 1st and 3rd) but would go stright to 3rd. When trying to pass...it would try to kick down to 2nd from third and nothing would happen except high reves like if I had put it in nutral...then when I let go...it would snap back into 3rd.
So from all this the trans finnaly decited to start slipping in 3rd..
OK got onother trans from a J/Yrd...the thing shifted like shit...but 1st and 2nd worked well...I loved that I had 2nd gear..till about 70mph redlinening..   :( ...3rd was slipping though...then the TCC decited it would give me hell after a highway run...SO nutral drops it is to get home...to unstick the F#cker.
OK got a trans from a 92 cavi with a Isuzu engine. The thing looked rebuild...even new paint on the torqe converter, well pained back and lower oil pan ..that was only possible by beeing removed...OK
I had problems intalling the 88s shift switch on there but got it working...OK
I put Dex V and two quarts of MObil 1 ATF. The sh$t chatterd in first then catched like normal..and shifted fine..but 2nd slipped...3rd was good. THen now 1st slipps along with 2nd..3rd is good. Is this tranny weaker than the v6 one?

OH issues....
Now im rebuilding a race tranny...I found a company that sells me performance Red eagle friction clutches and Kolene steel plates.
http://www.bulkpart.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MDITP&Category_Code=125 Is this a good make and price. Also what else do I need to make my issues disapear?
I see that they list the 4t65 tranys torque converter on the torque converter list for the 3t40s. What gain is there from this torque converter.
I don't want no more slipping!
When I took apart my first tranny whoes 2nd gear wasn't working...I found out that indeed the valve body had a stuck valve..due to moisture. The clutches were good and the 3rd gears were worn to hell (noting but metal)and carboned and wraped. If im right the clutch pack next to the differential is the first/revers pack, then 2nd gears, then next to the chain drive is the 3rds. Correct me if im wrong.

I think I could rebuild this thing myself.
Any advise from you poeple whom rebuilt trannis would be nice.
Are the 4t60 clutches and packs the same as the 3t40s? It seem like the 2nd gear pack could use one more clutch in there....theres two steels next to each other.

Jeff..quote...
QuoteThe Red Eagles are pretty good at first but tests have show they do not hold that way for long, need better and I have those, working on some excellent 3rds and those custom clutches are supposed to come out by the end of this month

O-freaking great. What the hell am I suppose to do! I haven't got any input into my tranny rebuild from anysite.

Somebody throw my a freaking bone here!!!
