Ok, my mastercylinder no longer holds fluid for more than 10 miles, so I have come to a crossroads with the car. I either have to find a way to get a CHEAP, and WORKING replacement, or it's going to have to go out of commission for a while. There's no way in hell I can spare anywhere near the change necessary for a new one at this time, so I'm not positive what I'm going to do right now. But....
My question is, if I find a replacement to swap in, are there any local Chicago TGP guys who would be willing to give me a hand with this project? I have no clue what I'm doing. I've never messed with doing the brake pads, much less touched one of these complex, old school ABS monsters, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I'll obviously be right there trying to help as much as I can myself, but it would be terrific for someone with some experience to be along side. And afterwards, dinner is on me anywhere you want to eat! :D
If I was closer I'd do it for you. Sorry.
I saw a TGP in a yard here not long ago, I'll see what I can dig up. To bad yu werent closer. We could pull it in the shop and convert the thing to regular brakes(I have all the stuff for mine, just havent been able to park it for long enough, we did it on my cousins TSTE though).
I'm in the same situation. My Powermaster is shot as well, there is no power assist and it leaks fluid. i called a junkyard and they found a complete unit that he was going to sell me for $350, without hesitation i said "sold". That made my day. :D Well the next day I went to pick the system up and the guy was like "i dunno where it went to, it was here yesterday." That pissed me off. So needless to say i'm still looking for a powermaster. I called Prior Remanufaturing and they told me to mail them my entire unit and they will completely rebuilt it for $691.05. This will probably my last resort to this problem, or maybe converting to vaccum brakes, but that is risky for me to do cause i've never converted like that before. That price seems kind of high just for a rebuild, but that is just me.
Well....thanks for the virtual offer, guys. Too bad neither of you were closer. :( As for the conversion......this is going to sound really stupid...but I prefer keeping things on rare cars like these as close to stock as possible, even if that includes a really crappy ABS system.

Wow!! There's not a China man's chance in hell I'd pay that much for a 15 year old PM III out of the junkyard of all places! Even if it's working, for how long? And when it goes, not only will you have blown $350, but then you have to get
another one. I mean, I bought my
entire TGP for $400! The only way I'd buy one from the junkyard is if they wanted less than $100 for it. Otherwise, for
that much, I'd scrounge together the difference, and get a freshly rebuilt one.
Now that i think about it, $350 does seem kind of high considering it might have the same problem mine has. I guess i was so pissed off that GM wanted almost 3 grand for a PM, 350 sounded low. I may just go to Prior and get mine rebuilt. What do they do exactly when they"rebuild" the unit? Do they just replace parts on it or fix the problem areas?
The Prior rebuild is a very good choice. i had mine done for $659 about a year ago by them and every part is gone over and tested. You simply put it in and fill it. You also get a 3 yr warranty and now you can sleep at night. Installation and bleeding is a breeze. My car stops on a dime now. Just remember to fill to the step on the inside of the resevoir. Good luck.
