Title: FFP pulley is on
Post by: no1kicker on July 07, 2004, 10:20:00 PM
Got my pulley in the mail today, installed it tonight.  Took almost 3 hours.  Problems that I had were the bolts bending (on the cheap puller from autozone) and the new pulley being so damn hard to get on.  For the puller, I suggest using smaller bolts (3/8 x 16) that clamp the puller right to the pulley.  I luckily had smaller ones and it came off very easily this way.  Also I would get a longer center bolt (the one that holds the pulley in place, don't know the size) to help the new one go on.  I had a hard time pressing it on.  A longer bolt would have allowed me to tighten it on, then switch to the proper bolt afterwards.  I hope this makes sense.  I took it around the block, but I can't tell you if I feel anything until I take it on the highway tomorrow.  At least I can check off another item on the to do list.

Almost forgot to mention I'm using a 695K6 belt.

I usually line up crankshaft pullies and tap them on w/ a small rubber hammer/mallet.  I would imagine that if it's like other UD crankshaft pullies, that you should notice that the engine revs a little more freely now.  I've only had experience w/ a UD pulley on a 00 S-10, the truck revs a whole lot quicker w/ the smaller pulley on there.

Have one on my 89, I was leaking, replaced the seal (also lightly tapping it in with a mallet - completly against the instructions  ) and it does not leak any more.  Make sure you are using the proper lubricants (rtv, grease, and antisieze), Cant tell you of any differance, since it has been 8+ months since I have driven my STE.  A longer bolt would need to be specially ordered as it is an odd size.

I am interested in hearing if you think it makes any difference.  I am considering getting one for my TSTE, but don't know if it will make a noticable difference or not.  I would think it would give me like a tenth or something like that, but I'm not sure.  I just want to hear what you think.

Well it's been on for a few days and no problems yet.  I definately feel a difference in top end.  It hits redline quicker and feels a bit lighter on the highway.

Maybe I'll have to invest in one of those...I can see those 13's creeping right up.

Mechanics have been putting, pulleys, balancers, and seals in with primitive tools like mallets for 75 years and will probably continue to do so for another milennia so I figured it would work and have done it at least 6 times with no ill effects.  sorry, just my 2c's.

Exactly, and I also said I used a *rubber* mallet...It's not like I just get it close to lined up and beat the pulley on with a metal hammer/mallet.  I make sure  that it's lined up before I tap it and lightly tap it on...you will find some crank pullies that simply aren't going to go on by hand if you work on cars on regular basis.

Just ordered one of these tonight.  It should help.  I am gonna send the payment for it tommarow (have to send a money order since I'm 16 and don't have a credit card) and wait for it I guess.  Hopefully it just gets me that much closer to 13's.

You're 16 and have two TGP's!?

I remember getting my TGP when I was 16. Don't worry about the money order, I've sent tons of money orders before [mostly ebay]. The wait does suck, but it usually only takes a week at most for it reach its destination.

Well, I don't really have two TGP's.  the STE is mine, and the TGP is my dads winter beater and what I drive when I'm working on the STE.  So the 2 door really isn't my car...

I have also send hundreds of them (literally 100's, I have the reciepts), so I'm not worried about it.  I've just never sent one for something that wasn't on ebay before.  It just kinda sucks that its gonna take twice as long as it would if i had a credit card.

FFP Pulley is now on my GP's new LG5/4T60-HD drivetrain. Will be checking it out next week.. But I will not be able to report if there's a difference since I never drove the LG5 without the FFP before.

Sorry

Just compare it to your SE, unless that has a pully too?

Why not?  Then you could say the pulley is worth 70hp.
