Title: help... abs won't stop!
Post by: tyroelite on July 26, 2004, 01:23:51 PM
My ABS pump won't stop running.   Even when I turn the car off, the pump keeps on going!  It is raining pretty hard here today and this is the first its done anything like that... could it be something shorted somewhere in driving through puddles or something?  ANy ideas where to start on it?

For now, I've just disconnected the negative battery.... not a great solution.

That condition is caused by the motor relay failing.  Go to www.turbogpgarage.com and check out the Powermaster info section.  Pn#'s are there as well as replacement directions.. Chris A. has some good information there.  Good luck.

dam... 300$ for a freakin' relay!?   I'm really starting to hate GM.

Does anyone happen to have a better pic of what I'm looking at than that tiny one on Chris's site?

If no one else does it by then, tomorrow I will take a pic for you and post it here.  It's kind of late now but I will be working on my car tomorrow and have a spare pump so I can get a good pic.

A better pic would be great if you could post it thanks.

Anyone have a part number for that relay by chance?

What type of brakes are in a regular 90 N/A GP?  Since it doesn't have ABS at all... how would that swap into a TGP?

When you find the relay remove it and take the plastic top off. Inside you will see a set of points similar in size to the points of yester year. If they are stuck together carefully pry them apart trying not to bend anything. Get a point file or an extremly thin file (thinner the better)put the file in between the points keeping it straight, close the points and clean them up. A magnafiying glass helps, You want 2 smooth surfaces with full contact. I had to do this about 3 years ago and its still working.

You can also replace that relay with a fan relay. I did this before I filed the points. I am still playing with this. The brakes work as advertised but I haven't got the ABS light off yet.

Good luck

Jud

OK, so I tracked down that relay way down in there and pulled it up and took it off the wires... Inside it was all sorts of wet with brake fluid.  I dried it off as best I could and plugged it back in, connected the battery and the pump didn't run constantly anymore!  Hopefully that just fixed my problem.  We shall see.

Why would there be brake fluid in the relay???

Probably a leaking rear pump housing on these PMIII's.. anticipate a rebuild or replacement in the near future.

it has occured to me that not too long ago in bleeding brakes and filing the resevoir some fluid did spill down that way... I'm hoping that is the problem.. I'm going to monitor the situation for a bit and see if I can find any leak indication.

Make sure when "topping up" you de-pressurize first, then fill to the "stepped" mark on the interior wall of the reservoir. Overfilling will create a nice mess.

yea ... wasn't me that took the cover off on it though unfortunately...

Here is the deal now w/ things:

Ocassionally brakes work like they always have (most times)
If the pump is running nonstop, If I just pull up the relay it will often stop. (wiring?)
When it doesn't stop from just lifting the relay box, if I unplug it and plug it back in it won't be running.  (relay opens w/ no power?)
Once the pump isn't running again, it will work for a while without any problems usually.
Sometimes though, when it stops, as soon as I hit the brakes, it will start the pump going again and it will run until I first hit the brakes and it will stop for like 2 seconds then start again whether I still have the brakes in or not...... grrrr... i hate PMIII

Is it possible to switch from the ABS that we have over to non ABS brakes like regular NA GP's had in 90?

I'm still thinking it is the power relay that is bad... so does anyone have one they'd be willing to sell to a poor college student to ensure long life of myself and the vehicle?  (no brakes is bad in traffic)

My auto TGP has vacuum brakes.  It's quite possible, but VERY involved, Chris knows he's done it a time or 2.  Although I haven't done it, I will be soon w/ Sunshine, and I also talked to the P/O that did the swap, and got a pretty good feel for what all is involved.

the vaccum brakes refered to on Chris' site are for non-ABS? or for vaccum assisted ABS  or doesn't it matter still the same problems.

Never actually looked to be honest.  But the ones on my car are non ABS.
