Title: Who Has Their Battery In Their Trunk.
Post by: SpeedDemon on August 27, 2004, 12:00:46 AM
I was just curious if anyone else has spent the time and effort in putting the battery in the trunk of the TGP? And if so how is it working out?

Yea , do it man it is sweet. if you drill thru the trunk and ground to the frame w/ a rubber grommet

I've been considering doint it as well.  GP Ape, did you get a kit for it or just do it on your own?  I've been looking at the kit that Summit sells.  It comes with the battery box and all wiring.  Anyone else have this done?

I'll eventually relocate mine as well(for a fenderwell intake).  I'm not sure if I'll go w/ a kit or not(I need to see what's available at the local parts stores, etc. here first I suppose).

I was thinking of moving mine to the trunk, but then you need a battery disconnect switch in the outside of the car in order to drag race.  Even the guys at the crappy I track go to require it if you relocated your battery.

You need :some wire crimpers made by GardnerBender, ring terminals , sandpaper (coarse), 2 gold battery post clamps, spraypaint, oxygen free 2-4 gauge power cable red and black.Use the crimprs by GB that look like pliers not strippers, they make a real good crimp that rarely fail. They even work on 4 gauge if you use a hammer on them(Takes a lot to break these)

There is a bracket that mounts to the passenger side muffler, remove it where it comes off the frame and sand the frame and the bracket. Now that it is all bare metal you can bolt in the 2Ga. ring terminal between the bracket and the frame .It is important that this wire be 18 inches or less. The copper ring terminals work fine, sand them too. use ring terminals on all battery connections.  Now drill a hole through the trunk floor and put a rubber grommet in there after its deburred and squirted w/ spraypaint.

All the front grounds must be sanded down too. The one that goes to the front battery ground that is bolted to the core support by the radiator must  take it and sand it down through the factory black paint until all corosion and paint are gone. Mine had a green powdery build up right there (oxidation). Big gains from this step.

4Ga. wire can be used if no more amps are going to be added to the factory system and you don't plan on adding any accessories. But the ground on the front and back should stay right around 18" (or less).

You have to have some way to secure the battery. I used about 20 screws through a plastic batt. tray into my trunks false floor which is made out of MDF particle board. But if you dont have a place planned out to mount it, construction foam can be used as an adhesive and enclosure for the battery.Use Great Stuff construction foam and cardboard. The plastic battery tray will adhere to the irregular surface of the metal trunk floor when the foam sets. I would use like one or maybe 2 bolts through the trunk to hold the tray anyway though.
